Porch Redo Part Deux

By Anita 43 Comments

The porch revamp continues.  I have working on my porch for a few weeks now, and although I am not finished, I wanted to give you an update on where I am.

Close up of rocker

You see, I have been in love with the porch on Between Naps on the Porch for some time.  It is a gorgeous porch filled with lamps and ferns and lots of comfy furniture.  I was limited on what I could do because our porch although covered is open at both ends and becomes a wind tunnel during storms.  The wind can be quite fierce back here and I am amazed at the damage the wind can do.  One time, the wind took one of our Adirondack rockers and threw it off of the porch.  I emerged after the storm that night only to find that it was missing.  I looked and looked for it, knowing that no one had been there to steal it.  The next morning, I found it broken to bits about 20 feet from the porch.

So I can’t have too much out here because of the wind, the rain, and Mr. Mouse, who loves to chew on my fabric, blogged about here.  Now that I have made all of my excuses and toned down your expectations significantly, I will show you what I have done.

Here are the BEFORE pictures
Yes I bought black rocking chairs.  It was an end of season sale at Garden Ridge, so there weren’t many choices on color, and I needed to fill  a 600 square foot porch.  I figured I could always paint them later, and now I have.
Daybed with Black and White Outdoor Fabric
Below are the after photos.  I’ll post again, when I make some more changes.  I made pillows and a new daybed cover out of linen and vintage feedsacks.  If you want to see more about the daybed project click here, and here to see how I made the pillows.   The rockers were painted with white exterior house paint and then covered a glaze I made from Paris Gray Annie Sloan Chalk paint (glaze made by thinning the paint with water).  I think the glaze ended up being too drippy, so I don’t recommend using the paint that way, or be sure not to thin it too much. To even out the color I will dry brush some more gray paint on it, when I have time, and of course that will give me an excuse to take more pictures.
The “new” gray rockers on the back porch
This Ikea table is on my “hit list” to be painted with Annie Sloan paint.
Mosquito netting really used to keep flying pests at bay

Notice the column shown below?  That is actually from our city house.  We had the old wood columns replaced years ago, and I kept one of those columns.  Glad I saved it.  I think it needs a big Boston fern on top.

Antique Pine Farm table at other end of porch

The ottoman below is from Aidan Gray.  The boots shown are my everyday ranch boots.  I have some dress Lucchese boots that I wanted for this photo, but in the end I decided the scuffed up boots would fit in just fine with my Texas French theme.

More to come later.

First of all, I love the the space. I would love to have a front porch like that! And I wouldn’t have thought to paint the rockers gray, but I really like them! Jealous!

The French porch has German pillows on it! Very pretty. Reminds me of Provence. Headed to Fredericksburg, Tx. this weekend and then Hamburg, Germany next week.

Beautiful! Love, love, love the day bed on the porch. Might have to steal that idea. 🙂

Is there any way to plant a wind break? Just wondering. “Blogless”

    Anita,

crazy winds you have there, wow. time to tack that furniture down – baha! well, i think your design insp is on point and lovely. and the reality of what you have accomplished is like a dream. i could almost envision Robert Redford riding in on his stead and resting on one of those chairs with a glass of lemonade in hand. congrats and kudos to a stellar feat, you are a diy gem!!! Boston fern most def, yes and more yes.

this should seriously be submitted for a photo shoot location, it’s to die for.

and i have to say, after taking a breeze around and enjoying every moment of it, that the surprise backyard visitors would be a dream of mine!!! wow, right there…up close and personal. i know you guys weren’t all that excited by their claim of the crops but i would have jumped for joy : )

i did adore seeing gorgeous Lassie and her awesome “chase-away” skills. she’s a beaut! happy new week wishes lades! ♥

Hello Anita! I love your porch, so nice and wide! I have a porch that wraps around 3 sides of the house, and then a deck, but not as wide as yours.
We are by the water, I wonder if a daybed would make it though?
I also loved your auction post. We don’t have many of those here, it would be fun! I love watching the shows on TV about them.
I am your newest follower. I saw that you like dishes at my friend The Tablescaper’s. We shop together, very dangerous!

I still can’t get over that daybed cover you made, Anita! It’s just gorgeous! I would have bought the black rockers, too, and although they are not bad in black, I love how they look gray. You’ve done such a nice job on your porch. Can you put anything up on either end to keep that wind and rain from messing up your set-up? Like shutters or something?
