A Spoonful of Merry Christmas

By Anita 22 Comments

Joy to the world, and Merry Christmas.  It just has an even nicer ring to it when it’s stamped on silver.

I love silverware and I love to talk, so it such seems like a great marriage to me.  SILVER + WORDS = FUN CHRISTMAS decorating.

I made these using metal stamps that I got from Pick Your Plum.  They can also be purchased at eBay.

The word ‘Christmas’ worked best stamped on two spoons together.

I tried using the spoons in several containers, but in the end, selected my vintage silver trophies for the most ‘pop’.  I mean really, they have so much character, they are AWESOME.  I know, it’s an over-used term, but sometimes it’s just the best word, so I use it any way.

The problem with using these spoons is how to get them to sit upright in a container without tilting too much. I thought, ‘I need a frog’ as in the floral kind, not the green slimy kind.  Then it hit me… black eyed peas.  For most people black-eyed peas are not their ‘go to’ solution to problems, but for me, well…  yes I’m different. Sometimes you just need a little black-eyed peas in your life.  I poured them into my trophies, and voila’!

Now my spoons could be arranged like flowers.  I did the happy dance… well not literally.  My dancing days are over so long as my collie is at home.
She wants to herd so badly that if I start dancing, she nips at my feet.  I know it sounds cute, but trust me, it hurts.
If you want to make these spoons, use a mallet to flatten the bowl of the spoon.  Then take a sharpie and put a dot every place a letter will go.  This helps you keeps your letters evenly spaced. Place your stamp over the sharpie dot and hit it with the hammer. One blogger said to only do this once, but that didn’t work for me, and I had to hit the stamp several times to make the indentation.  Next, use your sharpie to generously go over each letter. It will look very messy, but that’s okay. Remove the excess ink using steel wool.  What is left will look like this.

So cute! I have been wanting to try this for a couple of years now. I would love to make plant markers for my herbs.

Anita, your spoons are so cute! But, the black-eyed peas were such a clever solution; and sparked all sorts of ideas, in this little head of mine, for New’s Year’s Eve decor. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Anita,
I’ve seen these adorable “stamped” spoons but had NO CLUE how to make them!!! (I’m thinking this could be a project for “Mr. Ed” in the very near future!!!) I love the use of black~eyed peas for your stablizer in the arranging! Now, I do a “Happy Dance” every time it SNOWs On Crooked Creek! Perhaps we could share our moves? Ha!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

Love your stamped spoons, Anita! I’ve yet to purchase a stamping set, but I think I’m hitting the store today . LOL -You use black eyed peas- I use clear glass marbles. before that, I used to use coffee beans, but that got to be too expensive. :-). Merry, Merry!!

Your spoons are just beautiful, Anita! Thank you for sharing how you made them. The black-eyed peas were a great solution – I have used dried beans for projects in the past and chick peas work well for a touch of green.

What a great idea-it looks like it’s the same principle as leather stamping-now where did I pack away those leather stamps so many moons ago…
I wonder if they would work on silver??

These look great, and by coincidence I saw some very similar in a London department store yesterday. They cost about £25 each (about $40).
