I had planned to buy an antique clock really I did. I even found a fabulous one and came very close to buying it. The price was a bit of a problem. The antique Mora clocks are very expensive, so I just wasn’t sure.
And so I waited…
and waited…
and waited…
until I found this one at (affiliate link) Joss and Main.
The price and size were right, the color… not so much.
I really didn’t like the black for my house. And so I bought it, knowing I would probably paint it. I wanted gray.
I started with a coat of chawk paint (provided by) Southern Honey in the color Otis. I used two coats.
Then I went over some of the detail in a lighter color of chawk paint, Stanley.
Then I did some very light sanding in just a few places.
Lastly I added a coat of Howard’s walnut wax, then buffed off the excess.
I am very happy with the results. I mean I really, really love the look.
It looks much more authentic to me in the gray paint.
Although these Swedish clocks, also called Mora clocks are not French, they go with French style.
The moral of the story is that you can paint most anything if you use chawk paint, no priming or prepping necessary.
The new color is so much better and I love the shape of Mora clocks.

I love your Mora clock and am glad to know where to find one since the antique ones are very expensive. FYI – Swedish style furniture (Gustavian) is a much pared down version of the French style. I love how you painted the clock too.
I guess great minds think alike LOL ~I had purchased this same clock from Joss and Main with every intention of painting it. SO I DID and I love it!!!! So happy with the results! I used Paris Grey chalk paint and rubbed Old Orche over it and rubbed off for an aged look. I love the wax you used on yours perhaps I should do the same! For a fraction of the cost to buying a Mora I think we scored!

I sooo appreciate your posting this as I’m debating buying thsi same clock (LOVE the style) and repainting too!
The original finish looks VERY distressed and seems to have a crackle finish. I’m not so sure I like that. Do you suppose I could smooth it out more by sanding it first? I was thinking of trying to change the roman numerals to numeric. Can you access the face directly? Thanks for any response.
No you won’t be able to change the clock face, I don’t think. I wouldn’t sand the piece either. If you don’t use a wax you won’t notice the finish as much. Hope that helps.

I love the color you chose. Did you paint your clock with one color gray? It looks like there might be a lighter shade along the details?
Good eye! It’s Otis and Stanley. I think Otis is the darker color.
