I thought today would be a great day to showcase the changes one room has seen over the course of 5 years. When you’re a DIY blogger or a home decor enthusiast, you don’t leave things alone for long. This is a photo of my daughter, Elise’s room when we moved into our home. You can see I have a large canvas on the wall, tall lamps and sconces on the wall. If you look closely you can see that the blinds are temporary. There are also no curtains. I loved those lamps, but felt they were too dark for the room.
I sold the chairs and lamps, bought bamboo shades, and went for a monastic look in the room. But the room felt a bit flat. It needed something a bit more. I loved the mirror, but in the end, that mirror ended up in my powder room.
I thought a new set of lavender and white bedding would be a nice change.

I also wanted to see what the room would look like with curtains. I like curtains in here, but think that lighter curtains would work better with the room. I’ve got some fabric and the curtains are in process now. My sewing machine was malfunctioning which completely threw me off schedule. It’s the electronics that are messing up, so I actually bought a new sewing machine. I don’t do anything too wild on my machine, so I knew I didn’t need a fancy one, just a basic machine. I have a Brother machine and love that it has a threader for the needle that makes my life so much better. The button hole function is also like magic. So I decided to stick with Brother. Besides, I will have a smaller learning curve since my old machine is Brother. CLICK HERE to see the model I chose. I hope to show you the curtains later in May.
The next change was with the mirror above the bed. I changed it for a smaller mirror and some darling sconces from Round Top. I wish I had a source for you on those, because they are super cute. I also changed the bedding for this bedspread on the bed. It’s a green and cream striped long drop bed cover.
And for the latest changes, I’ve changed the lamps and added the rug CLICK HERE. I’m also thinking about the chests are wondering if they are too dark. If you have any thoughts on that, feel free to leave a comment.
You can see how changing just a few things does make the room look different. Here’s another project in the works. See the chairs below? I’m going to slipcover them! I’m going to go with something in the blue/green family. I’ll do this project after the curtains. It’s fun to have projects to look forward to.
Now, I have something exciting to share with you. Kelly from My Soulful Home and I worked on a Texas Flip and Move house! Like before CLICK HERE, we do not appear on camera, but we worked behind the scenes to help get the house ready for auction. Look for episode #904 of Texas Flip N Move on the DIY Network on April 27 to see the episode. I think it comes on at 8 PM, but I am not certain. We had so much fun working on the house, but it was a lot of work.

I loved seeing the changes in the room. I like the striped bedspread with the striped rug. And I think the chests would look great with at least a wash of lighter paint.

Did you paint the iron bed or leave it natural? I have a full that is like that. It’s painted a dingy white. I bought it for $25.

I love, love the wicker basket at the end of the bed and the long drop bed cover. I dont see a problem with the side dressers, their color blends well. Instead of changing the whole lamp; why not change the shade only?
All of your elements are beautiful, but: (this is an honest question with the upmost respect and my lack of knowledge on design) why do you want a mirror above the bed? All of the mirrors are very beautiful but they don’t reflect anything. How about filling the wall with a collection of different shaped mirrors with the same frame color, but French design?
Wilma, I appreciate your suggestion, and and delighted you offered some ideas. I’ll think about that one. Who knows, it might end up that way later! I’m still mulling my options.

Love the room! I would normally think the side dressers would be too dark also. However, you have lightened everything up wonderfully so they just don’t stand up and scream at me. I actually love the look of dark wood and white walls.
I sincerely wish I knew how to sew. I might check out some youtube videos because currently I make my own curtains and shades with hot glue or stitch witch. Not the best way! 🙂
Leigh, well that’s definitely an option. How about taking a class locally? It might be fun, and I think you would have someone there to answer questions also.

I think the night stands provide a nice contrast since they *aren’t* a light color, but they aren’t too dark either. And I love love love the bedspread.

I LOVE the room as it is now, especially the mirror and sconces! How lovely! I like the striped pillow on the bed. I think the bed side tables are also fine since they don’t stand out much. If you ever need room, you can always stack them,paint them, or totally replace them. At any rate,you do a wonderful job decorating, The room looks totally French Country to me! I could stay in there indefinitely! 🙂

The chests are fine dark, because they balance all the other lightness. I’d buy another, identical or v similar mirror, and mount them over the nightstands. Then hang a nice picture over the bed, such as a French style print or a sampler.
Hi Anita, I just found you on the Scoop with Yvonne and others. The rug in the finished room is what it needed to bring everything together. I like the shades without the curtains, but I am less inclined to use curtains. Because the bedside chests are big and a bit dark, I would think about painting them so they blend with the lighter wood you have in the room. I read your “About me” page and have so much admiration for you as “THE” mother, author, decorator, blogger, and talented person. I will continue to follow your blog and hopefully become a better diy decorator.
The room is lovely as is. In fact, all the different styles were each lovely.
If it were my house, I would put the lovely (three piece ) painting back above the bed. I would also lighten up the bed tables with a light paint color. I would change the curtains, maybe a complimentary color to match the bedding? And you are already working on that.
I love the bed and the windows, which let light into the room.

I LOVE the room! I don’t think the side dresses are too dark. I think just the opposite, they are a nice contrast. And it looks like they match your floor nicely. But I am sure whatever changes you make will look lovely due to your discerning eye & talent!
