Old White + Old Table = Fresh Look

By Anita 24 Comments

It is amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do to transform a piece of furniture.  But I must give a warning here.  If you are one of the readers that cringe when I paint a really old piece of furniture, avert your eyes, NOW.
The table and rocking chair are both from the 1800’s and from Mr. CH’s family.  And when they came to me the finish looked like this.

I know, I know, some of you love the old oak look.  I, personally,  am not a fan of golden oak.  (That’s my collie girl supervising me.)  I used  ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) Old White.  Here is the table with the paint, after I distressed it and waxed it.

Next, you can see a close-up of the detail on the antique rocker after I painted it.  Sorry, I didn’t snap a before photo.  I used rugger brown Fiddes wax on the rocker so that the carved areas would really show up.

Love the change. I have several golden oak pieces that I am so ready to paint. Thanks for the inspiration.

Some things just look so much better painted and that table is one of them! You’ve given it a new life 🙂
    It looks great!

    Have a fantastic weekend!

I think the rocker and the table look wonderful. Girl, I would LOVE to get rid of that “golden” oak. I would be thrilled if my hubby would agree to me painintg our kitchen cabinets and our fireplace. He just thinks you shouldn’t paint major things like that. I have tried to paint most of the furniture, though.

Lovely, even though I’m one of those that likes “natural wood”! You’ll see when I get off my duff and start posting pics on my house blog. My goal is to start Monday. I’ve revamped my game plan, so hopefully I can get it going. Til then.

    Blessings

Anita, I just love the table and rocker! I think some things look better painted! It is always a dilemma whether of not to paint. I think you did a great job and I would have painted them too! Your collie is beautiful!

You know you’re not alone in the love of painted furniture and your pieces look great! I’m not a fan of the golden oak either. I have a dresser that belonged to my Grandmother that I can’t bring myself to paint. If I’d bought it in a garage sale or thrift shop it would have been painted already! So why can’t I bring myself to paint it? Maybe one of these days.

    Hi Anita,
As lovely as the finish is (and I do like oak), I love what you did to the two family pieces! They look so charming and the dark wax really shows the great details. It’s so nice you have family pieces! My grandma was a really modern girl, and she got rid of everything old! Now, I collect other people’s old stuff, and I like it. 🙂

Love your painted pieces! I love the style of your little table. If painting a piece means you will love and enjoy it in your home, then I think you should go for it!

I’m not an expert on AS paint but Old White is my current favorite. These pieces turned out great. I think they look much better. Any improvement is a good thing!

Have to admit, liked way table looked natural but it’s your table so have every right to do what you felt best with it. Not really lover of golden oak myself but idea of natural antique, love those old tables but I am few years older than you with memories of old tables. Actually think dark walnut well done on table would be pretty.
I have so many memories of family with those old beautiful tables, born in 1940 had different view of furniture before I even knew or cared about it. Wish I had inherited couple of those old parlor tables as they were pieces of art. Enjoy your table and rocker. Happy daze
