I admit it. I have a thing for santos. I know, I know some of you think they look a bit creepy. One reader wanted to know what gives with the monk haircut. I’m not a santos expert, so I’m not sure. I just like them.
This one has an interesting stance. What does it look like to you? I found this charmer at (affliate link) Joss and Main. I kinda like his karate chop stance. Don’t mess with him. Are Santos male or female? They were originally patterned after saints of the catholic church, so some are supposed to be male, and some are supposed to be female. They were made for people who lived in areas where there were no priests. The height of their popularity was during the 1700’s and 1800’s based on my research. Most santos you see now are reproductions, since most of the original ones did not survive.
They don’t all have wings, but sometimes they do. I don’t care for dolls in general, but there is something intriguing about the santos for me.
Any way you slice it, I think they are very interesting.
Here’s a look at the santos that was in here. This one looks female to me. I’ll show you where this one ended up later.
I’m with you – I like ’em too!!
I am loving the santos, especially the one with the wings! I have always loved rustic religious artwork, especially frescos by Giotto, and Mexican rehablos for their rustic folk-art look. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice! I love them too. I have 2, one very much like your second lady. Trying to find crowns that fit and stay in place.
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one. :-/ I do think they are interesting and it’s very interesting how one looks male and one female. You have a way of making anything look good though.
Agree – like them a lot! I think they are an unusual and interesting addition. In the past I only put mine out at Christmas but you have me thinking about displaying them all year,
Wow! Love your new santos.
Hi Anita, check idea books on HOUZZ written BR Mike and Becky Dietrich. They have a fabulous santos lamp that is often included in their photos and article. Have a great summer. Teresa
I like them as well and really like icons, also a teaching tool.
I like Santos too…little too expensive for me. There was one on Goodwill Auction…went for about $450…I believe it was original…not repro. I like yours…they’re neat.
They are certainly very beautiful and intriguing dolls…love your new one!
Interesting dolls….don’t think I’ve seen them before, but I really like what I see. Thanks for sharing.
I love them and I only have one.
Anita,
I do believe that the Santos “grow” on a person.
I didn’t like them in the beginning . . .
I have one and I adore her and the tranquil presence she brings into my life.
She has been in the ‘”exact” same spot as where I first placed her last Autumn.
Just this week, I thought she needed a new home.
I’ll be moving her to a “new” space, soon!
Thanks for sharing your new Santos, dear friend!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Eu tambem adoro santos, principalmente as Santas Ana e Santa Amélia. No meu pais não há oportunidades reais de encontrar lindos santos antigos. Mas os seus são maravilhosos. Parabéns.
Ana, these are reproduction. The real ones would be very expensive.
Santos are very interesting pieces. I love the new one you found. I don’t jave any, don’t know if they would look right with all my Asain decor:)
