My Trip to the Salvage Yard

By Anita 38 Comments

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed going to the salvage yard to check out the junk.  My builder thought I was too dainty to go by myself.  (All Mr. CH said was ‘Lock the car!’)

I keep trying to explain to him, that I really am okay going somewhere that’s not a fancy showroom. I finally asked, “Do you have any clue where I shop?”  Although I have yet to find something awesome by the side of the road, I dream of finding precious junk in a ditch. That would give me such street cred.  If I do ever, you’ll be hearing me brag about it for months.

So I was not allowed to go alone.  We met at the salvage yard.  (I felt like my dad was with me, except that he’s younger and has all of his hair.) Maybe it was unnecessary, but this is the Southern way. Yes my hubby is pretty Southern too, but he knows I go to some tough places to junk shop, so he’s not worried.

You are looking at the old bead board that will become the ceiling on our new porches. Isn’t it grand?  The greens, blues, and grays will all be mixed together.

See the wood below?  I considered it for the wood floors, but didn’t end up using it.

The salvage yard guy, Wes was very knowledgeable about his wood. Here he is pointing out something that I meant to remember but quickly forgot.  Maybe it was the saw marks.

We also came here to see the wood flooring below. It was a floor in a hundred year old warehouse.  We considered using it for our floors. Look at that tight grain, which I hear is impossible to find in new wood.

When I found out it was pine, I steered away from it, since we have a collie. Some day I’ll show you the collie-sized scratches on the pine floor at the ranch.

Want to see what the antique bead board looks like on my porch ceiling? Here it is.

My friend Meg said it looked so “Round Top”!

Oh, how I would love some of that wood for flooring in my dream farm house. Just a dream though. Love the ceiling. Leaving it or painting it?

LOVE it! Though, I think I expected the wood to run the other direction. Totally unexpected! Love the mix of hues. I remember going to the coolest salvage place in Houston. Olshan…is it still there?

That’s funny that you had to have an escort to the salvage yard. Some men don’t know what a steel magnolia is. I drive an 03 Buick Century. Miss Buick and I have hauled all kinds of stuff-dirt, trees, and old door, etc. When the guys “help” me load stuff up they look at me funny. Who needs a truck when you have an old Buick!

BTW, you have street cred with me..for what it’s worth. 🙂

So, where is this wonderful salvage yard?

Oh it is glorious. Wow! Yes, they have no idea do they? Always surprised to see us dirty and working some of these guys! And tight grain, yes, it’s harder to find. It’s from older growth. Again, loving the porch ceiling, it’s fantastic!

Anita, how beautiful that you got some great reclaimed boards to use for your porch! Will you be painting it or leave it natural? What a great way to add so much charm and history to a new home!

While the wood looks great, especially on an old house, just be careful because the paint contains lead. It’s a hazard if it’s chipping. I wouldn’t put in on the interior of the house and I’d encapsulate the paint that is peeling.

I want some. We are using old wood on the floors and some walls and some ceilings. So glad you got it. If you located it in Texas, PleasePleasePlease tell me where!

You will someday get your street ” cred ” , it happens in unexpected and miraculous ways. I love the wood ceiling and I can picture it on a wall, as a back splash, or simply cut in different lengths and framed with some of the other great woods you looked at!
