Frenchy Guest Room Makeover

By Anita 31 Comments

You might have seen pictures of my guest room before, but I have a few more things to show ya.

And here is what it looked like a month ago.

The black French bombay chest (that I purchased new a few years ago) has been replaced with the antique pine dresser from the auction (click here.)

I made the French toile bedding several months ago.  (Sorry, no before picture there.)  I saw some bedding at Horchow that I really liked, called Essex bedding, which is similar but is a solid gray color.  I admit that I didn’t want to shell out the $700+ for it.  It’s actually on sale now though, if you are interested.  I thought I could make my own, and so I did.

You know how standard sized pillows are never long enough to cover the full width of a queen bed?  Well, I decided to use king sized pillow for this bed.  I used this plain linen fabric for the back of the king-sized pillows, but after I finished them, I realized I liked the back better than the front, so they are on the bed backwards.

I had an iron headboard in here that I didn’t like, so I gave it away.  I then bought some louvered door panels at Lowes.  I found some similar ones online at Home Depot here, but I think the prices have definitely gone up since I bought these.  I bought two.

I used a paint technique on the doors that I covered in a previous post, here.

Now onto the night stands. They started out like this.

I didn’t like the shiny dark finish, and the lamps were too tall.  Who bought those any way?  Hee hee.  Yes, the cord looks terrible below the night stand, anyone got any great ideas of how to hide those cords?  I used Annie Sloan’s old white paint and Fidde’s rugger brown wax (recommended by Miss Mustard Seed in her video tutorial here).  Here are some close-ups of the end tables. The actual technique I used to distress the tables is covered here.

I hid the cord for this shot, but then I couldn’t turn the lamp on.

I also added a blue transferware pitcher and then switched it out with the silver tarnished one.

For the lamps, here is a shot with Aidan Gray lamps.
And with the Marshall’s lamps that I painted and waxed with Annie Sloan paint (click here)

Gorgeous, Anita. Love that toile. I think it is the same as the pillows on my bed. The pine chest is perfect in there. What a find. I learned from someone else to tape the cord up to the back of the furniture piece and then it doesn’t show anymore.

I’d like to make a reservation for next weekend please. Beautiful job! Knowing how to sew sure comes in handy. I don’t know how many things that I have copied and saved mucho dinero doing it. Well worth my time. I am going now to read your tutorial on the paint. I think I am the last one to jump on the old chalk paint band wagon. I can’t wait to try it out.

Love the silver tarnished urn! Isn’t it amazing what a coat of paint can do for a piece of furniture like the nightstand?!

you are one talented girl to tackle making bedding and it turned out beautiful! i recently covered a body pillow in a fabric similar to yours to put at the foot of our bed cause hubby doesn’t like anything at the foot of the bed at night so i can easily just move the pillow…and sometimes i mix it in with my other pillows.

love, love, love those marshall’s lamps! our marshall’s closed a year or two ago so i have to visit one when we go to the gulf coast about 3 hours away…guess that’s a good thing for my pocketbook!

i wish we lived close to each other because i have boo-koodles (is that a word?) of old shutters and i would have happily donated a pair to you!

    XOXO!

The room looks great! Love the pine chest & the change of color in the side tables. (I am probably the last person in Blogland to use chalk paint! I need to keep up.) The toile bedding you made is fabulous!

    Have a great weekend!

Anita, the toile for the bedding is just so pretty! Good job on the nightstands, too. I always tape my cords to the back of the furniture and down the legs until the cord reaches the outlet. Hides it quite well! The room is so cozy. 🙂 Sue
