Hard Won Trophies

By Anita 19 Comments

So when I say these trophies were hard won, I mean it.

That’s right I actually won these!

One says “Colliery Gardens and Surface Maintenance Competition”

Another is a award from “Nottingham Schools, Badminton Association, Boys Doubles”,

and the last one says, “National Coal Board East Midland Division, Best Pithead Baths and Canteen Garden”

What… you don’t think I really won these?  Are you doubting me?  Why MUST you be so suspicious?

Must I produce the receipt from the auction where I WON them?

I was sitting next to a sweet lady who also wanted some of these trophies.  There were quite a few.  We agreed that I would bid on them, and then we would split them. We agreed ahead of time, that we would not go over a certain amount.  I bid, but was outbid by someone else.  The winner selected several trophies, and then the auctioneer offered the remaining trophies at the price I had bid to the back up bidder, who just happend to be me!  I went up and grabbed all that was left, and we split them.  I took 3, and she took 3.

I also snagged this great display box.  Does it look a bit odd to you?  It’s widest at the top, and narrow at the bottom. I didn’t notice it before the auction began, but I could tell someone was going to get it for about $40, and wondered why it shouldn’t be me.

After I got home with it, it hit me.  It’s the top of a grandfather clock.  Well, I mean it used to be… the top of an grandfather clock.  Now it’s a display case.  Someone added that shelf inside the cabinet I am guessing after clock broke or after the bottom was eaten by termites.  I have lots of theories as to why it’s no longer a clock case.  I love that someone before me re-purposed it.  I would say it was a blogger, but I’m guessing it was converted to a cabinet long before there was such a thing as a blog.

Surly it was the parent of a future blogger for sure, that repurposing gene is hard to get rid of in only one generation.

Hey, sometimes it pays to be “next in line,” haha. I have the hardest time finding vintage trophies here in my neck of the woods. I’m so glad for you. Have a great weekend, Anita.

    Anita,
Hard won trophies, indeed!!! Good for you…not giving up…or giving in!!! I adore the part of the lady next to you helping with your victory!!! Nice to take someone along on our journeys!!! Love the Grandfather clock turned cabinet! Reminds me of the antique Barber Shop curio cabinets showcasing hair tonics and such!!! Sounds as if you had quite a productive day at auction!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

I would never doubt that you won these! I’m too busy still trying to figure out what a pithead garden is! LOL! Great trophies! How nice of you to share them with a fellow auction-goer too! I like the cabinet too – bet you’re right, that it was part of a grandfather clock. Makes a great display case! Sounds like a fun time at the auction! Hugs, Leena

Yes, you worked hard to get those babies and I would have, too! Those are lovely but I’m really coveting your grandfather clock top turned display cabinet. (I have a weakness for old wood pieces like that). That’s a beauty as well. Congratuations on all your new finds!!

Those trophies are quite a score! (They’re hard to come by around here!) I love them on the ‘cabinet’, whatever it was 🙂
