This was so true of my mom-she came to this country as a war bride and thought the streets were paved in gold; instead, she got a 4 story walkup in Brooklyn with an alcoholic that she managed to keep in check and save his jobs many times over; she scrimped and saved to eventually buy her own house in Staten Island in 1978, the year I left for college. She gave us kids everything and sacrificed having anything for herself. She upcycled everything and anything before it was fashionable to do so, even the strings from tea bags to use for tying stems in the her little backyard garden. Thanks for this reminder of exactly what her job description was.
