Have you ever…
slept under the stars?
Outdoors in the fresh air,
with a soft breeze,
where you could count the stars as you nodded off to sleep?
I have. When I was little, my brother and I would visit my grandparents in Oklahoma. On occasion my granddad would say, “Let’s sleep under the stars tonight!” He said it with such a sense of adventure and excitement that we couldn’t resist. And to make it even more enticing, it sounded like something my mom wouldn’t approve of… no walls to keep the insects at bay, and no protection from marauding Indians. It was the 1960’s in Oklahoma after all.
I knew about Indians too, (the term native American was still unknown at the time). My expertise revolved around the fact that Great Uncle Leo was a full-blooded Indian, and he wore an eye patch, giving him a “mystical Indian with a touch-of-pirate thrown in” look. We were afraid to be alone with Great Uncle Leo. Sure he was married to my very anglo Great Aunt Theda, but let’s face it, he probably had a scalping knife in his back pocket. (Turns out he was kinda boring, and never did much but sit and watch TV, but still we never turned our backs on him… just in case.)
I think my granddad was onto something. Sleeping outdoors is so peaceful in a field of bluebonnets. I love napping out of doors, where I can feel the breeze and hear the birds chirping.
With my granddad, we pulled old rusty cots outside for our camping adventure. What a luxury it would have been to have a real bed.
Sweet dreams my dear friends.
There is a real Indian story that legend says happened near our ranch, but I’ll save that for another day. If you hear it, you won’t be able to enjoy sleeping under the stars.
For those of you that love White Lace Cottage, Anne has asked me to let you know that because of a change she made, her blog may not show up in blogger blog rolls any more. You can still follow her blog on Facebook or on Bloglovin’.
I’ve never been much for camping but if I had the bed in these photos I might change my mind! Love that bed spread – what is it made of??
Jill, it’s linen.
such an adorable memory, and garden spot, anita:)
Such a great post, I am not one to sleep outdoors but for that beautiful setting I might change my mind.

I’ve only slept outdoors in a tent…but in a real bed, could be convinced to try it!
I’ve slept outdoors many times but nnever in such a beautiful bed.
I love these pictures…..zzzzzzzzzzz…sleeping
Tonight and this weekend would be perfect to view the meteor shower in such luxe!
Love sleeping outside. I have an antique twin bed on my screened in back porch. Two problems: 1) when the dogs sleep with me they bark at every rustle in the pine woods of east Texas and 2) we are experiencing the ugly green pollen right now.

I did once as a college kid, slept on the beach, pitched a tent with a bunch of friends…and had a blast. Oh to be young again!
I cannot imagine a more picture perfect setting than the one above, its beckoning to me for a catnap!
Wow, Anita. I’m not sure I’d stay out there all night, but a few hours of star gazing on that lovely bed would impossible to resist! Gorgeous photos!

PERFECT spot for an afternoon nap! How DREAMY:):) Love the bedspread too. XO, Pinky
This is just beautiful, Anita! And those bluebonnets! Gorgeous! I’ve always thought I’d like to have a sleeping porch. That would be close enough to “under the stars” for me.
Amazing picture. i love this. it is really beautiful
I have never tried it but it sounds amazing! Your photos are so pretty by the way.
That is so pretty and love your cute story, too. How on earth did you haul that bed out there??
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. You have out done yourself with this post. Stunning. We slept under the stars in our back yard when I was a kid. We would line up sleeping bags and all the neighborhood kids would come. Such wonderful memories. Would have loved to have that bed!
What a nice story to hear while i’m sitting here at work. You took me away from my desk for a minute, into that meadow under the stars…it was lovely… i can’t wait to hear the other story too!
Cindy
sleeping under the stars is wonderful; have loved it since I was a little girl. I’d love to visit Mary Jane Butter’s farm and sleep in one of her outdoor spaces…lovely!
Love your setting with all that gorgeous linen…
I would love to sleep under the stars one day… What a dreamy post.
Great weekend to you.

How dreamy.. pun intended! Luscious bed and bedding beautifully situated outdoors. And your childhood memory is so sweet. Don’t you love that grandparents can create such fun memories? I am still hoping for a hammock outdoors… someday!
This is beautiful! Such a lovely setting and wonderful story. Thanks for sharing.~~Anglea

Some of my favorite memories are of sleeping outside on summer nights. Your place is so amazingly pretty this time of year!

Anita I love this post! First off all your photos are just stunning…they really capture the imagination. It reminds me of an old Waltons episode where they moved grandpa’s bed outside, I thought that was the most natural place in the world to have a bed. Snoozing outside, at least for me, always brings the best and most restful sleep ever.
Wishing you a lovely end to your week.
XO Barbara
Love the simplicity of it!
