Silhouettes and how to use them

By Anita 1 Comment

Let’s start with explaining what a silhouette is first. It’s an outline of a shape, and typically the shape is of a person’s face from the side. They were very popular in the 50’s and 60’s. My parents had one made of my brother (the first born) and as a child I wondered why they never had a silhouette made of me. Oh well, now that I’m a parent, I get it.

That was my first experience with silhouettes. I didn’t think much of them until we inherited a lovely double silhouette of my in-laws from 1954. They had been married for about 10 years when it was done, and yet still had no children, practically a crime in the 5o’s.

So that’s a fairly traditional silhouette except that it portrays 2 people instead of just one. Now that I had decided silhouettes are part of my new ‘thing’ I’ve found some new ones I like. I’ve added these to my home here and there.

I love, love these tin silhouettes that I have hung in different places around the house. These are really large at about a foot tall. I hung this on a big bottle.

I think my favorite way to display the tin is hanging it on a mirror.  The top one seems to be of a little girl, while the one below reminds me of a grown woman.

Now only do I love the silhouettes shapes that look like people, but these cow shapes are pretty cool too. The neat thing about the cows is that they are also chalkboards. These chalkboards stand on their own.

And I just can’t express how much I love the sheep silhouette chalkboards.

I’m thinking these would be cool to use for place cards at a dinner.

Well I am sure there are many more ways to use silhouettes in your home, but I wanted to share just a few. You can click on the photos if you are interested in purchasing any of these. The family ones I’m keeping but the rest are available!

So do you have any in your home? I’d love to hear how you display yours.

I’m sharing 10 things you can do to make your porch cozy at the BALI BLINDS BLOG.

Believe it or not, I have a silhouette of my “grandcat”. My daughter, Hannah, has a ragdoll cat and she took her and had a silhouette made. It’s actually pretty cool. I have several cat figurines I’ve collected over the years and the silhouette sits among these on a “cat dedicated” shelf. ?
