How many times have I heard this cry for help. Often it’s me talking to myself. Still it’s a valid problem that we all seem to face from time to time. So what do you do when your home feels stale and tired? Paint it? Change out the flooring? Completely renovate the kitchen? Well sure those things would certainly give your home a new look, but they are all expensive. I thought I would cover 5 ways to knock your home out of that stale feel without a lot of money. Ready?
- Change out the pillows. I do this all of the time. You can move pillows from one room to another, you can keep extras in a closet and rotate them in and out, or you can buy new ones, and give the old ones away. Replacing pillows is a lot cheaper than replacing a sofa too.
This pillow is available in my shop. I had it custom made from vintage grain sacks just for you. (I only had two left last time I checked.)
This pink pillow is also in my shop.
The one below was made from a vintage hand towel.
2. Move the artwork around. Again you can buy something new, or you can simply switch up the artwork from one room and move it to another room.
You can even layer artwork over a mirror for a fresh look.
The lovely Debi Coules giclee below is a new addition to my online shop.
I also love the cow and hay print.
3. Play musical chairs. I bought a chair for my closet, then moved my old closet chair to the bathroom. I moved the bathroom chair to my bedroom, and then bench that as in my bedroom got moved to the guest quarters. One new chair had a ripple effect throughout my house, so that in the end the purchase of one chair refreshed 4 rooms.
4. Find something unusual for storage. I used a vase to hold wooden spoons in my farm kitchen, shown below. I use oyster baskets to hold magazines, and an old trophy to hold my lipstick. For those of you in the Houston area, I have a few of the bread boards left in my space at Heights Antiques on Yale.
5. Add something seasonal. This could be anything to bring in the feel of the season or an upcoming holiday. Since it is October, I’m showing some fall decor.
And there you have it, 5 ways to spruce up your home and give it a fresh look. If you’ll excuse me, I need to move some things around in my house.
Fun things I’ve just added to the shop.
I’m a contributor for the Bali Blinds Blog and today I’m over there talking about decorating with dishes.

I love all your suggestions to freshen up. I love making pillow covers. I can keep the pillows in place and just make interesting zip on covers. I love fabrics and textures and this helps my fabric fix and to experiment with pattern and color.
And the chair switching idea is useful too. I try not to overthink it and just go with the flow. Accent chairs are easy to move about; some overstuffed chairs can be switched between living spaces.
I also keep my seasonal decor simplified by just decorating one or two tabletops, buffets or antique cabinets. It keeps me from getting too much going on.
Thanks for the great ideas.
