Meet my French cabinet.
There are actually two of them in my living room.
I had an inspiration photo that I gave my builder and then the work began.
It’s hard to remember that my house looked like this for a long time. Slowly the cabinets began to take form.
Then the building phase was completed, and it was time for paint.
I loved the way they looked, but I knew that I wanted to antique them.
Did you notice the chicken wire in the doors?
I used Annie Sloan dark wax on the cabinets. Before I could apply it though, I repainted all of the surfaces (oh yes I did) so that the wax would adhere. The cabinets had been painted in an oil-based paint, so I covered them in a light coat of calcium carbonate paint. Click here for the recipe. The calcium carbonate paint takes the wax much better than oil-based paint.
The cabinets are a little more brown than I meant for them to be, but it turns out that the color goes very well with my dark wood beams in the kitchen.

They are beautiful. I’m glad you showed the area before they were there, because I was puzzled. I was wondering why you would put cabinets in front of windows, but now I realise they aren’t full length windows.
