Do you wonder what you should splurge on, and what you really don’t need to splurge on? Well of course, it’s such a personal decision for everyone, but I do get asked for my opinion on the subject, so I’m going to give my thoughts on the subject, and I would love to hear yours.
You can also listen to the podcast (link above) to hear what Kelly and Yvonne had to say. We didn’t agree on everything. For example, Kelly doesn’t like to splurge on lamps, but I do.
ACCENT CHAIRS
I think we all agreed that you can find some really good accent chairs without spending copious amounts of cash. The chairs shown above I found at an antique auction for less than $50 each. They were from France too. Just keep in mind you won’t find those kinds of prices in an antique store. You have to buy them from wholesale sources. If you want new retail, I found some keepers below that are all under $500.

CABINET HARDWARE
You can spend a ton of money on hardware on your cabinets, but it’s not typically necessary. One source we know of for cheaper hardware is D. Lawless (not sponsored) CLICK HERE. For example, you can get this Cooper Ribbon Pull for less than $6 each.
WHITE DISHES
I do love vintage white ironstone dishes. They tend to be pretty reasonable, but still if you need a lot, it can definitely add up. So what I suggest is to buy some less expensive white dishes to use and then mix in a few pieces of old ironstone. That’s what I do. And can you really tell once you put the dishes in a cabinet? Go ahead and grab some cheap dishes!
Can you tell which item is new?
Yes you can tell, but it still looks nice, don’t you think? It’s the pitcher on the right, if you missed it.
Here are some options below.
BREAD BOARDS
The real antique bread boards can easily cost you $200. So why not buy reproduction? The large board in back is old, but the two in front are very new.
And if you go smaller, you can save even more, like this one, Bread board.
Okay I want to hear what you have to say? What are your ‘don’t splurge’ items? Let’s help eachother.

I too am a fan of white dishes. Buy wherever I can find them. Try to buy at least 22 of the same

I agree there are many things that you just need the look not the expense. Mix with the “good” stuff and no one knows!

I am always on the hunt for ironstone and transferware (blue for me please)…my favorite haunts are thrift stores and second hand shops. Lately there is a crop of consignment stores too popping up everywhere. Usually many of their pieces are vintage and well made – if your looking for furniture pieces to revamp. Half the fun is the hunt itself. I have found really wonderful pieces for bargain prices. Of course there is always etsy, which is a guilty pleasure of mine. Things that speak to you are always worth it.

I love shopping for “knock-offs”! You can always “distress” bread boards – the old ones are beautiful but expensive! I have a mixture of Pfaltzcraft, Pier 1, TJ Max and a few Tuesday Morning white dishes – love them all! I have square ones, round ones, plain ones and some with fancy edges. Just fun to play with.

All of the chairs give me the heart eyes! ?

I recently splurged on an antique French cane bench because it’s so clearly authentic and distinctive. You can just tell. I rummage for ironstone everything and can still find bargains tucked into flea market booths. That’s what makes shopping so much fun.

Thanks for all the fun and great ideas. I am totally addicted to your podcast. I often wish they were longer but it is properly better at the length they are now so that I get a few things done. I know I could get things done while I listening but instead I would rather relax, sip tea and ponder all you have to say.

Nancy

Nancy that is fabulous news and I passed it along to Kelly and Yvonne. Thanks and hugs to you.
Julie Briones says
I agree with Nancy… I think the podcasts could be just a wee bit longer. 😉
Love your bread boards. And… I don’t splurge on most things. Just don’t have it in the budget. >.<
Anita says
Thanks Julie!!! You are so kind. I passed your lovely comment along to the girls.

My Mama taught me that white dishes look lovely with any kind of table linens, so I’ve always used them. Ironstone is fabulous, but stoneware is usually more affordable. I recently found plates for .50 at a Goodwill store. I bought 10, and am thrilled to add them to my others. The shapes match, so no one but me will ever know.

I love white dishes as well. I sometimes get them at a great price, but I never mind paying more if the dish is beautiful or very unique.

I LOVE mixing dishes and with white as a staple you can do just about anything. I have all price points
and as long as they aren’t that super bright white they will all mix so nicely!!! I just love all your topics,
thank you for your blog!!

I’m a collector of all things listed! I find most of my ironstone in Goodwill, thrift shops and flea markets. I’ve found some beautiful French armchairs by accident when I drove around back behind an upscale hotel- they sold me all 17 for $50!! It pays to look absolutely everywhere!!

I never buy anything unless it is on sale, or I know it is a super good buy. Great tips though!

I love shopping at thrift stores, and most of my household items have come from thrifting. Thank you for your podcast series. I have not missed a one!!! I look forward to pouring my cup of coffee and joining “the girls”. Many blessings to you ladies.

Always love a bargain—it’s the only way for me to buy anything (usually thrift store) because I live on my social security only. Love the hardware site…

l long time ago I learned to always get the best product for the best price. always try and buy on sale and I seen many of my wants on sale or at a great price, have I always bought them no. It has to pass the do I really need that and what else could I use it for. Sometimes I will pay a bit more than I would normally. I love listening to the Podcast. When I do it is usually on my phone and I have not figured out how to navigate back and forth easy so I don’t because I am also usually not at point when I can stop and make a comet so sorry.
