Counter Stools for the island

By Anita 34 Comments

I like buying vintage furniture and fixing it up, but sometimes you just have to buy new. Counter stools are one of those items. Counter height stools are difficult to find, and finding 4 that match, well let’s just say I’ve never seen 4 matching counter stools any where at a second hand place.  So I knew I had to buy new.

French counter stools (2)

When I first saw these I fell in love with them, yes I did.  You will probably not be surprised to know that I found them at Restoration Hardware. (Not a sponsored post I just love them.)  I got the outdoor linen-look fabric which is not supposed to stain. That will come in handy since I have a teenager in the house. Mr. CH even said they were comfortable!  That’s good, because sometimes I get the “why did you buy this” look, but on this purchase, there was just a smile.

island

Can you believe 4 chairs just barely fit at my island?  I wish I could say it was all planned perfectly but it wasn’t. Oh it’s what I call a ‘happy accident’.    I’ve had some guests over for the holidays and these counter stools came in so handy.   They arrived only an hour before my first party in the new house.

I even got them on sale, which makes it that much better in my book.

When choosing stools for your kitchen I think the things to keep in mind are

  1. Is the style right for your room
  2. Are they comfortable
  3. Is the fabric going to hold up to food stains
  4. Is there a place to rest your feet
  5. Is there a back (I prefer a back for comfort reasons, but sometimes the back breaks up the room visually.)
  6. Will they fit in your space

Having said that, I will be honest, I bought these because I just couldn’t picture anything else in the space. And everything else fell into place. That doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it’s SWEEEET.

They are beautiful!! I’ve always thought I couldn’t get upholstered chairs/stools for my kitchen and breakfast room because they’d get stained, but I never thought about using outdoor fabric! That is a great idea!

Gorgeous stools – the outdoor linen fabric is genius! I also am head over heels for the touch of coral from the throw and pillow. Beautiful! Jane

These are fabulous for your space. I’ll be looking soon and I agree about the backs impacting the line of sight/view into the kitchen. I’m torn between no backs and comfort!

Could you tell me what color fabric and wood that you purchased on the chairs ? I’ve been thinking of purchasing them myself for my kitchen island. They look beautiful.

I think the wood is burnt oak, and the fabric is perennial linen weave in fog.

Beautiful! Do you know if you chose the Perennials Classic Linen Weave or the Perennials Solid Texture (The fog in classic looks gray, whereas in the solid it looks bluish)

        Thank you!

Other things you might consider when buying stools is the height of your counter/bar. They make stools for both counter and bar heights. Also consider if you want swivel seats for easier getting in and out; and castors another way for easier use. Also, if you are thinking of stools with backs are the backs going to block or break-up your view? Hope these ideas help. Your stools are beautiful and look like they were made for the room.

I LOVE your kitchen! I would love to use these stools in my kitchen redo. I have young children and I’m just a little hesitant on using fabric. Do you feel that this fabric is truly stain proof and/or easy enough to clean!? Thanks!!

The fabric has held up well with teenagers, but we haven’t spilled anything too messy on them yet.
