Balastrades, spindles and newel posts

By Anita 14 Comments

Here’s what I’ve learned.

The top horizontal part is called the handrail,
the up and down pieces that I would call ‘spindles’ are called balustrades,
and the big post at the beginning of the stairs is called a newel post.

This process began when I chose an antique cast iron fence post to be my newel post for the stairs.

That meant that I needed to have iron balustrades,

and an iron hand rail.
So now comes that part where I decide which balustrades I want for our staircase.
There are so many to choose from…

in lots of different finishes.

I want something elegant, inexpensive (ha) and something that isn’t over the top, or too plain.

My favorites are in the two photos below.

Then I need to select a few more newel posts from the selection below.

Another option is using a panel on the stairs.

I’ll show what I selected in an upcoming post… stay tuned.

Every piece is beautiful! I am looking forward to seeing your selections, as well as the piece that started it all.

    Have a great weekend.

I don’t envy you…I worked for 2 different steel fabricators for 10 years and even I am having trouble picking what I’d want…Good luck!

This is such a difficult decision! I love both of your choices! I can’t wait to see the tour! Oh, I have heard that one would add a final to the newel post to signify the house is paid for in the Victorian era.

I think life was simpler when we had fewer choice, don’t you. It is so hard when there are so many to choose from, but you seem to always stay true to what you love, so I can tell you will not waiver once you make the decision. Can’t wait to see the final product.
    Happy Saturday,

I know it will be wonderful!

I could never build a house from the ground up. Too many decision to make. My head would be in an eternal spin.

I like your choices, especially the first one with the bit of an oval bit. We once had a house with iron work that was all Spanish in style. I grew tired of it, as it limited other decorating choices. If I had to choose I’d do as you have, and choose something more English or French in appearance. Loving this series!

OOOHHH!!! I love what you’ve narrowed it down to. We’re almost to this point with our build, or at least to the point where we need to start thinking and considering what we want. Of course, in true fashion, my husband has decidedly different ideas from my own, so it will be interesting to see what we end up with! 🙂
    Thanks for sharing your selections!
