Antique Corbels – New House Update

By Anita 16 Comments

Building this new house is such an exciting ride for me. I go to the antique shop or salvage yard, grab a few things, hand them over to an artist, and *BOOM* I’ve got an awesome architectural wow piece in my home.
These corbels are from a hundred year old house.  The top board is who knows how old.  Because of the notched out back, I asked the carpenter to cut out the back and add another board there.

He did, but then it looked like this. So I needed to add some paint.

I knew I would not be able to match that incredible chippy paint finish, but I could do better than a naked new board look.

I used ASCP and then added some antiquing wax which was too yellow, so I ended up sanding most of the wax off.

It’s not perfect but it will do. In case you are wondering the painters haven’t come yet.

Since this piece is at the top of the landing for the stairs, you actually see the bottom of the board as you approach.

Uggh, I hadn’t thought of that, but I happened to have some antiquing wax with me, so I waxed the bottom of the new board.

Again it’s not perfect, but I think once I add artwork above the shelf you won’t notice this under side so much. I’ve bought 4 antique tin ceiling tiles that together are a whopping 4 ft by 4 ft, so I think the eye will be drawn up rather than down, when I’m all done. Oh I’m getting excited!!

I think it is very charming. I like that is not perfectly matching. It just adds to the charm.

I love incorporating those vintage items into your new house! That’s a fantastic idea. In an old house they might just look old. In a new house, they’re works of art!

LOVE the corbels and that you’re using reclaimed things – and what a great piece for a stairway focal point! Have you considered staining the new wood – black onyx or dark walnut? It would really recede then, and the other pieces would be the focal point. Loving your updates!

    Oh, GORGEOUS~!
To further disguise it, I think you could darken it with a bit of ‘Folkart’ brand antiquing medium? Just get the darkest brown/black you can find, rub a bit on and rub it back off…
It is a beautiful piece either way.
