How to Determine YOUR Style Part II

By Anita 6 Comments

This is Part II in my series of how to determine YOUR style.

If you didn’t read part I, you want want to go there first. How to determine your style Part I.

We discussed the importance of finding your style, and I featured several bloggers with different styles.  You can use your own name to define your style or you can use a style name that a favorite designer uses.

In Part I we discussed why you need to know what your style is. Today we are continuing to look at different styles.

Here are a few more bloggers and what they call their style.

Nancy from ArtsyChicks Rule

French Coastal Casual Cottage (with a bit of whimsy)

Look at that tall wainscoting and the soft colors!

Chic-Master-Bedroom-Makeover

Ursula from HomeMadeby Carmona
I lovingly call this space chic NY Style with a hint of glam, it’s a little more of a modern city flair in my typically transitional home.
Ursula used a simple color palate to get a modern sophisticated look.

Karen’s home is very warm and inviting.

I love the color on Kelly’s chairs and that charming dog!

Jane from Cottage at the Crossroads

Country Cottage!

Jane’s home is cozy and has some lovely pops of color.

As you can see each room looks so different and so unique. Even if you see 5 rooms that are all farmhouse style, for example, they will all look different because they have been designed by different people and they are in different homes. It’s important that your home suit you and your family. Don’t worry if it isn’t exactly like your favorite blogger’s home. It’s okay for you to do your own take on the style.
Honestly the hardest part of interior decorating is pulling an entire room together so it looks cohesive. To begin that process though it’s important to know what look you are going for. So how do you define your own style? I suggest you start on Pinterest with a new board called MY STYLE. Here you will only pin rooms that speak to you, that you adore. After you have many pins here, a pattern will probably emerge. You will begin to see a certain look over and over again. At least I hope that is what happens, but we’ll see.
Okay start your board.
Ready for more? Let’s go on to Part III.
On a side note, as you may know I’m a contributor to the Bali Blinds blog. This week I’m talking about how to freshen your home with greenery this week. I hope you’ll hope over and join me.

Great photos. I am going to use the “Morpholio Board” on my iPad to creat my mood board. Then, I will tie it in with some real photos from my home. Thanks for this series.

What do you do when your style is significantly different from your significant other’s (in this case, my husband)? My husband loves everything Arts & Crafts (all our furniture is Stickley and is not going anywhere). Darker wood, wood everywhere…I joke that he could comfortably live in a dark cave. I lean more toward beachy cottage/farmhouse…light and bright. Our house is currently a Craftsman and I have decorated it mostly in my husband’s style but I’d like to bring more of my style into the mix and I’m stuck. I don’t know how to mix the two.

Lora, that is a bit more sticky. I think you need to negotiate a lot. Did you ever see “Designing for the sexes on HGTV? There was a guy who specialized in just that.

I love this topic. I’ve been pinning to Pintrest for some time. One interesting thing i find is that i love French style, love rooms that are mostly neutral, and yet i decorate with lots of blues. Not sure how to get these two loves to meet.

    Anita,
    Great tips and advice!!!
I adore the bloggers homes you’ve chosen, dear friend!!!
One of the main things that helped me to realize my Traditional Design style
was my stack of resourcing magazines and coffee table publications!!!
To this day, I still enjoy flipping carefully through the pages of back issues!!!
I’ve put your “book” on my “Wish List”!!!
Hope “Santa” thinks I’ve been a “good girl” this year!!! (wink!)
    Fondly,
    Pat
