Antique Frames, and a Question

By Anita 29 Comments

The question is not do I frame artwork, but do I put artwork in the frame.

That might seem like a strange question to most, but to you, I know it will sound normal. (At that’s why I tell you what I’m doing and not my next-door neighbor.)

When I found these on eBay, I thought, “why not?”  They are made with wonderful plaster that’s chipping off in a decidedly delightful way.

So did it bother me that I didn’t have anything to put in the frames?  Of course not.  I was going to put them on the wall, but set them in front of the fireplace momentarily.  When I went to pick them up, I decided I liked them there.

Since I changed this room from red to white, I knew that I could bring in my blue French enamelware pitcher too.

I also put this vintage sewing basket in here. It covers up the missing bits of the rush seat.

The frames are leaning against a bit of yard fencing I bought and use as a fireplace grate. It’s really much more form that function.

To the left of the fireplace are some vintage sconces I bought at a garage sale years ago.  I also just painted the fireplace mantle.

Here’s what it looked like before I painted it.

I also painted the yellow wood box on my fireplace. Here’s what it looked like before.

So what would you do?  Should I put some artwork in the frames, put them on the walls, or leave them where they are?  Just don’t come up with anything too taxing, or it won’t happen.

What great frames! I think that that look great as they are, but would also look fab with art in them….so old French landscape oils…

Darling Anita those frames are absolutely beautiful as they are! Perfect without anything else, for me. For me they may be very well also supported above the fireplace arranged in an asymmetrical way.

    Anita,
I adore how many are showcasing empty frames hanging on the wall!!! I did just that today in the Art Studio…emptied some frames and hung them against the unfinished concrete wall!!! I like it!!! I’d say…don’t put anything in them for the time being. Perhaps in the future, photos of your daughters would be AMAZING!!! I think they look stunning where you have them now!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

Beautiful frames. I like them where they are for now. I like how you propped them so you can move them at will.

What beautiful frames. Perfect as they are no?? Just leaning there, looking all chippy and beautiful … I say they are perfect without the distraction of artwork in them. 🙂
I too have some laying around, empty and perfectly beautiful as they are…
    Thanks for sharing!
    Luv the mantel pained 😉

First of all….beautiful frames! I love them like they are and wouldn’t put anything in them, even if you eventually decide to move them. The frames are art in themselves.

Thank you for the feature last week. I am so sorry that I wasn’t here when it went up so I am a bit late in my appreciation!

Have a great weekend and enjoy your new found treasures.

Love the frames; however, I think they would look best layered on the mantle with the candlesticks all grouped together on one side and perhaps something low on the other. This would be a great opportunity to bring in a bit of fall also. Some branches or curly willow would also look good in your lovely blue pitcher.
    I’m just sayin’……

Also, if the candleabra would fit on the mantle, I would switch it with the white candlesticks. What do you think?

I would most definitely not put anything in them — they are truly art on their own! I like the changes to the fireplace and the white mantle is so pretty — the white really makes it stand out!

I like them just as you have them propped against your fireplace. The whole vignette looks just wonderful with all your vintage items decorating that corner of your home.

I love the changes you ar making to the fireplace area. I really like the painted mantle.
I like the idea of hanging a cluster of empty vintage frames that are uniquely different and an art form in itself (themselves?). So, for now, I’d say leave them as is. I love them!!

Hey, Anita. I like using them as artwork on their own. I think I’d play around with moving them to the side, more asymmetrical, and see how that looks. Or maybe even use them on the mantle with the same thought in mind. Great job finding those! They’re beautiful!

What’s so great about those gorgeous frames is that they are so versatile, I love them the way they are so I’d leave it for a while then when the season changes use them another way!

Leaning is always nice and casual. But I’d have a glass of wine and stare at them for awhile. Maybe a few glasses. A nice Cab or Merlot maybe? Wisdom flows whenever I do this, it’s just amazing.
    Wish I could join you.

You are too funny Anita! I usually prop my open frames up on the ground somewhere. I always love using them as a filler but only because I am not good at creating an arrangement on the wall with them. I am sure whatever you do will be fabulous. They are divine.
