Construction Progress

By Anita 28 Comments

I haven’t shown pictures of the building process lately and wanted to give you an update.  For those of you that missed it, we’re building a new city house, you can see previous posts on the new house, here and here.

The city house is very close to Mr. CH’s downtown office, and we are building in a historic neighborhood.

Here are some photos of the first floor framing going up.

You can see just how close this house is to the neighbor’s. These lots are notoriously small, but I say “Less to mow!”  This room is going to be the living room/kitchen/breakfast room.

Here is the second story being framed.

Okay did you see that?  Mr CH agreed to build a garage apartment! Right now the plan is to leave it unfinished, but that means one thing to me… S T O R A G E!!  We are talking to the builder about maybe finishing it out, but we are still working on the details.

The house is up about 2 ft off the ground on a pier and beam foundation. Because this is a historic area, the houses are all built up high rather than on a typical concrete slab foundation.   We are going to have a covered front and back porch, but much smaller than the big one at the ranch.

I’m not sure my daughter will have much of a view from her window, since there’s a big pear tree there.

I’ve been picking out appliances, lighting, plumbing fixtures, doors, brick, stone, and paint.  I’ll be sharing all of those selections with you later.

Stay tuned.

Anyone who has every build or had their home build knows just how exciting this stage is. I can even smell the freshly sawed lumber.

    Hi Anita,
I’m just a reader who enjoys your blog so much, and had to comment, as one who has built a house, how impressed I am with all you accomplish while building a house!! You have probably already checked out “powdered” brick, but if not, please do! I think it is a super look especially in historic neighborhoods!!
    All the best,
    Terry

I am so excited for you – building is so full of possibilities, and of course having a budget makes for creativity. Oh the possibilities for that space over the garage – I think you should carve a spot for yourself there. Pattty/BC

Our home in Australia had to deal with the same thing. We wanted to extend another space at home so we hired this awesome crew from perth wall removal that really helped us in the renovation of our home.
