Let’s talk about how to choose the right size accessories. I think this is something that is not discussed very often, but greatly affects how a room looks. The accessories need to be proportioned properly for the space.
See that everything on this table is not the same height. You definitely want varying heights. I also limited the color palette to make it all look cohesive. That’s a easy trick.
Below I used some items that were not that tall, but grouped them together on a tray. Then added the tall olive tree plant to give the vignette texture and height.
Check out the bowl and the figurine below. They are sized too small for the space. Well I think they look ‘okay’ but the space would look better with something a bit taller or larger.
See what I mean? Check out the space with a large bottle and greenery. Doesn’t it look better?
The accessories below are nicely sized to be seen, but not take over the buffet.
Here we have a lamp on the table.
And here we have the same table but with shorter accessories and no lamp. Which one is better? I prefer the lamp, but the color is nice with the flowers.
Now we have a shelf with a lot going on. Notice everything is large. Nothing gets lost here.
Here’s another example of large sized accessories for the table. I want you to think less is more, but bigger is better. Go with fewer larger accessories, rather than many small things. Small things either get lost, or end up looking cluttered.
Well those are my tips for selecting the right sized accessories. If you have a choice of small, medium, or large, go large!
Great tips for accessorizing. I will certainly put these to use when decorating.
Your before and after photos really illustrate the point well and why large accessories make such an impact. I will me incorporating your great advice into my own home!
Thanks,
Tamra
Choosing the right accessory gives a room a finished look. I especially liked the of the bedside tables.
Your vignettes are always so balanced and unfussy. Now I see why. Love these general decorating tips!
Thanks, Ginger
I always love your tips and the way you show examples to explain them. Definitely some things to think about. Enjoy your weekend!
Shelley
Thanks
Great advice! Easy to see and understand.
Great post!
Love the tips as well as the pictures which make it so easy to see the differences.
Go big, or go home. I like it! ๐
Glad to have the comparisons between “do” and “don’t do” — visual always helps me out more. I think most of us tend to put out our decor and don’t “see” what you see. Thanks for the help!
I think the little table between the two chairs definitely needs the lamp. The space needs its functionality but the height works well. To me, the table without the lamp feels like something is missing even though there are more items on it. Love these images; good visual lessons in decorating.
I love the vignette where “there is a lot going on”! Thanks for the tips.
This was a very informative post!!!!! Loved seeing the comparisons!!!!!!! I’m a big fan on how you decorate!!!!! Your pitcher with the flowers in it is GORGEOUS!!!!!! ?
Thanks so much Anita! Now what do I do with the little lovely collectibles? Some are antique & bring me happy memories of trips taken or childhood experiences. I love the large pieces, and enjoy my memories too. Any help is appreciated. You have wonderful ideas!
Gorgeous! You know I love the white pitcher. Pinned and I do hope you will hop over and add this fantastic post to my blog party xo
Good examples.
I too enjoy these posts where you show the do’s and the comparison! Very good post.

Great hints!
Thanks so much for the great hints. I am already rearranging my demilune table.
Great tips Anita. I prefer larger pieces as well. Simple and less fussy. I think it allows one to appreciate it all the more.
I think it’s important to have items with various heights to help your eye “move along”. Like you said, scale is important!
Thanks so much for showing the diffferent examples. I really have a hard time with scale and hope you continue to give different examples often!
Great tips. Thanks
Thanks so much for the insight! It seems such a small thing but it makes a big difference
Thank you for the details and photos. Pinning this!
I like the before and after. Thanks.

I just love the dining room. I could sit in there forever. Decorated just right.
