New House Update – Sheetrock City

By Anita 18 Comments

Oh yes, things are moving right along with our new house.

See the door and the window leaning against the wall?  Well this is just part of construction. I wanted an 8 ft door for the front of the house, but they put in a standard 6 ft door instead. They changed it out no problem. BTW, this is a construction door, and not the door we ordered.  The window on the floor used to be beside the fireplace. I wanted smaller windows so I could do taller built-ins.

This is just one reason you want a good builder. Some builders might argue with you, or give you a hard time when there is a misunderstanding. My builder said, no problem and changed out the windows and the door, without complaining. You want a builder who is good to work with. One who doesn’t wince when you change your mind, or when there is a mistake.  There are going to be some errors, that’s part of life, it is how the builder handles them that is so critical.

Above you can see looking from the keeping, or living room into the kitchen.  See the door to the right? That’s a closet. The other doorway is for the butler’s pantry.

This is the breakfast nook, and the back door.

Now we’ve moved into the front of the house, into the dining room.

Where you see the sawhorse is the study. We’re standing in the dining room.

The room above is our new bedroom. The bed will go against the left wall.

And here is the master bath. Above you are looking at the shower, and below you can see where the pedestal tub and the toilet area will be.

It really is beginning to look like a house.  The first months of construction, there are lots of changes you can see on the exterior of the house, but once the siding is up and painted, the work is focused on the interior.

Isn’t it fun to see it all coming together? I do remember at this point that once the drywall was done I just wanted it finished…and it seemed to take forever to get all the little finishing touches in place. I think part of it is that you just get more anxious. Everything is looking good so far!!!! You are right-a good builder is worth his weight in gold. xo Diana

It is great to see it coming along and that they are willing to make the changes that are needed when mistakes are made. 🙂

You are lucky to have that builder! We were our own builders so we made LOTS of changes as we went along. Even the best laid plans can change when something is right in front of your eyes. I know many people though who are living with things they didn’t want because the builder said “no”…..I always think that’s strange….who’s paying whom after all? Looks wonderful!

Hello Anita, Thanks for the house update. I was wondering how it was going! One thing I noticed in the pictures (and this is only because we are building a house so its sort of been on my mind) is how clean the construction zone is. Does your contractor have a crew to do that? Of course since we are building our house ourselves, I’ve been the one to come behind and keep things clean (its a huge job!) but we’ve toured some homes under construction lately and oh my word can the messes ever get out of control. I think it is a sign of a good contractor when they keep the construction zone clean and organized. Your house is gorgeous and will be so fabulous. Thanks for sharing! ~ Dori ~

    Dori,

My builder has all of the crews clean up after themselves. I love that too!! It usually looks pretty good!!
