6 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy

By Anita 55 Comments

Truth be told, it doesn’t actually get that cold here. Still we have damp, deary days that are cold-ish. Those of you that live in cold climates probably have tons of tips for how to make a home warm and cozy. I have a few, and I’m sharing those with you today.

Now let’s get to my tips.

THROWS ON THE CHAIR

We keep them on about every chair, and we use them a lot in the winter. I’m wrapped in one right now as I’m writing.

FURRY PILLOWS

They are so warm and feel so cozy. Just looking at the fuzzy pillows make me think I am warmer.

TEA OR SOMETHING WARM IN A BIG CARAFE

Tea is my favorite but I make wassail at Christmas time, which is a spiced hot apple cider. I keep a big carafe of tea that I use all morning at my house. It is delicious and warms me up.

The one shown above is actually an insulated French press. Below you can see my electric tea kettle which I use every morning.

FIRE IN THE FIREPLACE
It just isn’t cod enough for us to use the fireplace much, but I do love a fire. In this case there’s no firewood to bring in, just click play on the video below.

CANDLES

The warm gloss of the candlelight also feels very cozy and inviting this time of year.

SNUGGLE PARTNER

If I’m really cold, I do have a secret weapon. Molly is always nearby ready to warm me up.

I have throws for all sitting areas. The weather is in a constant state of flux in south Texas this time of year. And in the summer, I crank the A/C so low, my pre-menopausal friends use them then too! Stay warm, Anita, another cold front coming through!

I so envy you this morning. I only wish it did not get that cold here in Alberta, Canada. I woke to -30°c or -22° Fahrenheit. A warm and snuggly throw and a furry pillow is a must as is a piping hot cup of coffee!

I do a few things. I don’t use any overhead lighting (except in the kitchen but only while I’m cooking/cleaning). I think lamps with a warmer tone bulb make it feel cozier.

I always keep a scent in our home. I use plug-ins and candles so it smells like “my home” right when I walk in the door. My favorite is kitchen lemon for most of the year and then Christmas tree for this time of the year.

I try to make little “spots” where someone would wan to hang out.

    Great post!

It was -6 degrees with a wind chill of -30 here in Maine! When it is cold I break out the throws, turn on the gas fireplace, crank up the oil furnace, light the candles in the windows and cook something. This warms the house and makes it smell great too……..if you want cold, come on up!

It’s COLD in Nebraska this weekend -20 degrees wind chill tomorrow night! I’m a hot tea drinker all year round, I usually warm my water in the microwave. Do you like your electric tea kettle? I’m thinking of telling Santa I want one for Christmas but hesitate to have another appliance taking up counter space.

Love your dog Molly, she reminds me of one we had when I was growing up. They could have been sisters, she was named Lassie. (Of course, from the old TV show.)

I had a collie when I was growing up. His name was Tony. He played tether ball with us. He would jump up and hit the tether ball with his nose. He usually won. He did LOTS of cool tricks and was the neighborhood favorite. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories by sharing Mollie with us.
