Truth be told, it doesn’t actually get that cold here. Still we have damp, deary days that are cold-ish. Those of you that live in cold climates probably have tons of tips for how to make a home warm and cozy. I have a few, and I’m sharing those with you today.
Now let’s get to my tips.
THROWS ON THE CHAIR
We keep them on about every chair, and we use them a lot in the winter. I’m wrapped in one right now as I’m writing.
FURRY PILLOWS
They are so warm and feel so cozy. Just looking at the fuzzy pillows make me think I am warmer.
TEA OR SOMETHING WARM IN A BIG CARAFE
Tea is my favorite but I make wassail at Christmas time, which is a spiced hot apple cider. I keep a big carafe of tea that I use all morning at my house. It is delicious and warms me up.
The one shown above is actually an insulated French press. Below you can see my electric tea kettle which I use every morning.
FIRE IN THE FIREPLACE
It just isn’t cod enough for us to use the fireplace much, but I do love a fire. In this case there’s no firewood to bring in, just click play on the video below.
CANDLES
The warm gloss of the candlelight also feels very cozy and inviting this time of year.
SNUGGLE PARTNER
If I’m really cold, I do have a secret weapon. Molly is always nearby ready to warm me up.
What do you do to keep your homes cozy in winter?

Love your dog Molly – so cuddly
I like to use fuzzy slippers and my favorite throw when curled up in my chair watching tv after dinner. I like to drink my hot tea also!
I love pitchers and using creamers (mini pitchers) for holding utensils makes it inviting to indulge a beverage.
I love my down comforter to wrap up in with my Bassett Hound Audrey. She thinks this is her comforter…
I have throws for all sitting areas. The weather is in a constant state of flux in south Texas this time of year. And in the summer, I crank the A/C so low, my pre-menopausal friends use them then too! Stay warm, Anita, another cold front coming through!
Xo Ginger
Candles everywhere. Love your dog, we had a sheltie JW who passed away this year. Merry Christmas Regina
I so envy you this morning. I only wish it did not get that cold here in Alberta, Canada. I woke to -30°c or -22° Fahrenheit. A warm and snuggly throw and a furry pillow is a must as is a piping hot cup of coffee!
Please Anita, where did you get the electric kettle? It’s so beautiful.
The Collie snuggle partner is the Best tip!!
So love your ideas makes me warmer just thinking about the
I have a throw on my sofa year round. I even get cold in the summer sometimes. My cat also makes a nice lap warmer.
Thanks for sharing, all the ideas are great. I love burning candles and a cozy throw.
I do a few things. I don’t use any overhead lighting (except in the kitchen but only while I’m cooking/cleaning). I think lamps with a warmer tone bulb make it feel cozier.
I always keep a scent in our home. I use plug-ins and candles so it smells like “my home” right when I walk in the door. My favorite is kitchen lemon for most of the year and then Christmas tree for this time of the year.
I try to make little “spots” where someone would wan to hang out.
Great post!
Nancy
Great electric tea kettle. I always strive for cozy. Very important to me.
Thanks for your great site. Inspired!
Here in Central Texas, it doesn’t get very cold; however, for the holidays I keep a couple of Christmas themed fleece blankets on the sofa to warm up with on those chilly nights.
Love Molly and your tips
I love hot tea in the morning. Thanks for another enjoyable post.
Candles are a great addition to a room during the cold, dark days of winter. A good cup of hot tea and hot cocoa for the kids and we are all set for an evening of family time.
I love the candles in the muffin tin! I’m going to do this today?.
Love Molly… Thanks for the tips and stay warm..
It’s plenty cold here in DC! Thanks for the helpful tips!
We’re gonna be a little chilly here in Tx next week, though! Definitely will want to stay indoors next to the Christmas tree with a hot toddy near by. Kitties and doggies around me to keep me warm. And watching feel-good shows on Hallmark channel to give me the warm insides!
Molly is my favorite! My Libi is also good at keeping me warm and I think she enjoys my warm lap, as well. Thanks for sharing these tips.
I love our gas log fireplace, it has a remote control, so when I’m all snuggled under my throw I don’t have to get up! Now that’s being lazy!
I love your suggestions for making your home cozy. I don’t have a dog but do have a new gran who is a female puppy after having five grandsons. I get my cuddle time with her when I’m at my daughter’s house. Best one is having all the throws. A must for the winter months.
Molly is the best!!! I have throws on each chair and the Princess Posie cat keeps my chair and me warm!!
I love your pretty lounge chair in the window corner, and the muffin tin with candles is a great idea!!

Great tips, I will be adding them all this year, as we have our children coming for Christmas Eve! -Except we don’t have your warm, wonderful sheltie.
It was -6 degrees with a wind chill of -30 here in Maine! When it is cold I break out the throws, turn on the gas fireplace, crank up the oil furnace, light the candles in the windows and cook something. This warms the house and makes it smell great too……..if you want cold, come on up!
It was pretty cool in Montana this morning about – 15 windchill! I love to cuddle with my mini poodle Snickers, a warm quiet and a hot chocolate. Happy Holidays

Definitely need those in the winter. My little cuddlers are much smaller than Molly, but they fit on my lap!
During the holiday season, starting the week before Thanksgiving, I set up a hot ? chocolate/tea/cider station with all the fixings! People love it ? when they come over AND!! They can help themselves! Easy peasy!
Merrrrrrrry Christmas!
We have a lot of throws as well. If only my hubby would use them instead of his Eagles blanket. lol It is very cold here in PA right now. Warm drinks and throws are essential.
I love that Salton kettle, so much I just ordered it….Merry Christmas to me. I can always tell when our weather is getting cooler, our Yorkie finds my lap and we keep each other warm. I also have throws on the chairs
For me warm, autumn colors on throw pillow warms me
It’s COLD in Nebraska this weekend -20 degrees wind chill tomorrow night! I’m a hot tea drinker all year round, I usually warm my water in the microwave. Do you like your electric tea kettle? I’m thinking of telling Santa I want one for Christmas but hesitate to have another appliance taking up counter space.
Love your dog Molly, she reminds me of one we had when I was growing up. They could have been sisters, she was named Lassie. (Of course, from the old TV show.)

I had a collie when I was growing up. His name was Tony. He played tether ball with us. He would jump up and hit the tether ball with his nose. He usually won. He did LOTS of cool tricks and was the neighborhood favorite. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories by sharing Mollie with us.
PS: Of course you KNEW that she would be the hit of the blog, right?!
I am going to shut off my computer right now! Going to the fireplace, wrap in a throw and have a cup of relaxing tea so I can sleep tonight. Baby, it’s cold outside!
I love cozying up at the end of the day with a fire, a throw, a pot of tea, and my beagle, Molly. It really is a lovely way to end the day.
Do you know if the insulated French press still available for purchase? I’d love to find one.
I love the idea of using a vintage muffin tin as a candleholder! And my favourite tip that I do all the time is snuggle up with the family dog.

Your home does look cozy Anita. Thank you.
I wonder if you can rearrange the comment space so we don’t have to scroll through all the pages of comments to get to the comment box. If i”m on my phone it takes so long I sometimes forget what I wanted to say! Lately I don”t even try to reach it.
Thanks Portria. I will check and see. That is something that is not easily changed, but maybe my tech person can make that change.
Love all your suggestions and use them in the winter. Especially now in the panhandle of Texas, 22degrees brrrrr.
A cup of hot chocolate or hot green tea with my sweety beside me warm me up.
Love all the suggestions to keep warm and cozy!
My favorite way to warm up is to snuggle on the sofa with my twin boys on either side of me watching a great movie on television. Like It’s a Wonderful Life!
