Reclaimed Hardwood Floors – New House Update

By Anita 30 Comments

I’m excited to say that our new flooring has been installed. And by new, I mean it is new to us, but the wood used isn’t new at all.

There are lots of hundred year old houses in our new neighborhood. Many are being restored, but when a house is deemed not worth saving, they send in a crew to save whatever they can. Our new floors came from other old houses in the area that were being torn down.

You might have noticed that the floors look… well like they need to be refinished.
You would be correct. When using reclaimed wood it is installed early.  The workers walk all over it, and it gets scratched and painted by over-spray.

After all of the work is complete, the floors will be refinished.  I like knowing that the floors have a history. The builder tells me this wood has very few knots, and that the newer wood is full of knots.

I think the new old floors are going to be just right.

Here are the stains I considered. Can you guess which one I chose?

The walls are being painted gray, so I wanted a stain that wasn’t too yellow. I chose the one on the far right.

    Hi Anita,

Stopping by via Sharon’s blog. Your hardwoods will look beautiful when completed and the stain will compliment the wall color. Our walls are F&B grey and we have lots of white. Our floors are about to be refinished and I am considering a darker stain similar to the one you’ve chosen. My concern is that it might show the dirt (we have two dogs) and scratches. I’ll probably do the dark stain regardless:)

    Anita,
I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. Seeing your house being built makes me think about the way houses were built before the prefab/cookie cutter tract housing system was begun. Your house is going to be one that future generations will restore and/or reclaim materials.

Soon you will be moving in. How exciting!

Is your new home in the Heights area of Houston? The pictures you’ve shown remind me of the area, one of my favorite.

OMGosh – reclaimed wood? I LOVE that! Your floors will be absolutely beautiful and as you said they’ll have a history. Many times as you’ve also mentioned the older items are also higher quality. You’ve gonna love your new/old wood floor!

I have been having huge internal debates about tiles versus timber! Timber has won the battle – in the kitchen/living. Your floors are going to be wonderful and I love that grey stain. Exciting times! Jenny

These floors are great Anita. We have specialists in reclaimed floors in Lexington and the work they do with old wood is amazing. I love the stain color you chose.
