I’ve been talking about our new mountain house for awhile now. You can find all of the posts, HERE.

I spent a few months gathering things together, buying mattresses, and setting up services, and last month we moved some furniture into the house. We had one week to get it together and ready for vacation rentals. One day we had the plumber, two electricians, the cable people, and the handyman there all in one day. I asked the plumber if he was enjoying the party and he looked at me as if to say, “Party? Where’s the beer?” Well it wasn’t that kind of party.

The views are why we bought the place. It’s also in the heart of Black Mountain, so everything is close, yet the house has these amazing views and feels very private. It sits on the top of a mountain ridge. I couldn’t call it Cedar Hill, since it’s actually on top of a mountain, so we named our mountain get away, CEDAR RIDGE.

I love the views! It’s about 20 minutes from Asheville, home of Biltmore and Grove Park Inn.

Oh Anita! It looks fabulous!!! IF and when I can get Joe to get away, I would definitely like to rent this! I can’t believe how much you have gotten done. I also have never seen a mountain home decorated SO beautifully!!! Have a beautiful Sunday. XO
Kim says
Anita, you’ve done an amazing job! The rooms are lovely, warm, clean, and welcoming. Anyone, I’m sure, would love to stay there and enjoy the town and that view! Congratulations on your new mountain home/rental!
LINDA O. says
Beautiful! We love black Mountain and the Asheville area. Is your rental pet friendly? (Fingers crossed)
Anita says
Linda, yes for dogs under 30 pounds.
Barbara Ann says
We’ve been to Asheville and would like to go back. But I also want to get to TN. About how far?
Nancy says
About an hour on I-26. You’ll go over mountains and end up near Johnson City. Beautiful scenery on the way over!

So beautiful and what a great location. The only think I kept thinking as I looked at the rooms was that I’d be afraid to sit in almost all the chairs.
Amy says
It’s lovely but I would have painted the kitchen cabinets… just my 2 cents.
Anita says
Amy, yes we are going to redo the kitchen. Please keep in mind we had one week to get the house set up. I’ve spent 7 days in the house. I haven’t even gotten the bid back from all of the painters yet. We will be doing a lot to the house, but it will take time. And we have to do it all long distance. The other issue is that I will probably rip out the entire kitchen and start over, so how much do I want to spend on this version of the kitchen? Do I paint cabinets that I am going to remove in a few years? We’re trying to get it all figured out. Honestly I was just thrilled to get done what we did in one week. We added 4 ceiling fans and changed out 5 other lights. The bathrooms and the kitchen need a lot of work. After the week, all I wanted to do was sleep.

I thought the cabinets looked rich and fitting for a mountain house. Lovely, Anita!

Anita, it is absolutely gorgeous! What a beautiful mountain home! I love that area but haven’t been there for years…..seeing the photos makes me want to plan a trip!
Patty says
Oh! What a retirement home! I love the views AND that you have such wonderful spaces to enjoy those views. The rooms are a great size and I admire all that you have done….but I love your decorating and it was easy to fall in love with this place. Not wishing our life away, but bet it is tough waiting to live there and wake up to coffee on that deck. You have me ready to look for a place to play with this same way.

I was just in Ashville and I enjoyed it as I always do. I discovered the “art district” and a lot of artists. It was fun. I also recommend the Bouchon restaurant downtown for its “moules/ frites” mussels and French fries. The owner is a Frenchman from Lyon, a city well known for its great restaurants. I hope your guests will check it out.

Hi Anita. It looks wonderful! I wish you great success!! A Few notes from someone who decorated her beach house for renters….. Don’t put anything in it you are not willing to lose. Believe it or not, even under the best circumstances things “walk away” or “get broken.” Also, those people you’ve hired to help.?….well, the will never put things back the way you would…hence, the rental will only look like the picture the first time it’s rented (even if you give them pix after you’ve staged it!). You can’t really blame them… If everyone could do it…? I can’t tell u how many comments I got about the house not matching the pictures… It’s as simple as the bed not being made the same way or “how does a cutting board from the kitchen wind up on the third floor in a closet?” I’m not kidding… Really wild things that will leave you scratching your head,! As long as you decorate with things you won’t be hurt to lose… You will have a good experience!! In the meantime, since I live in NC… I’m going to try to be first!!!???

It quite pretty! I’m wondering why the water is running from the shower and faucets in each picture. I live in California where we catch as much water as we can, for example, we catch our faucet water as it is heating up to use for other purposes.
Anita says
Diane, I didn’t do that. The photographer for the rental agency did that.
Namcy says
Anita!!! It looks fabulous !! In one week you did an awesome job!! We have a home on a lake in Maine and rent it out too!! Managing 2 places is hard at times but we love our 2nd home in Maine!! Best of luck with renting until you can retire there!
Marijean Jenson says
That’s a beautiful place ! The setting is gorgeous also. My sister and her husband lived in the Asheville area. I was never lucky enough to get there while they lived there, but I would love to go visit the area someday !

You’ve created a very inviting vacation home for your guests! The one thing I would suggest adding is a good reading light on both sides of the beds. One bedroom has the cute stack of vintage suitcases as a side table with a very small lamp. The lamp isn’t tall enough to use as a reading lamp and the other side of the bed has no lamp or table. If a couple is sleeping there and wants to read before bedtime, they would have to leave the ceiling light on. Just a suggestion as we’ve traveled a lot and that is one thing that is sometimes missing and isn’t very costly to provide.
We live just over the mountains in NE Tennessee and love the area you have chosen.
Best wishes for your rental!
Sue P.
Anita says
Great idea Sue, and yes I plan to add lamps and more night stands. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Please keep in mind I had one week to get everything set up. I will be going out there again this summer and hope to add some furniture to the decks and lamps are on my list as well.

Love the house and the views. I live in the Asheville/Hendersonville area. It is a great place to live. Always something pretty to look at! I would love to know the paint colors you used. Are they listed somewhere?
Anita says
They aren’t since I don’t know what they are. I’ll try to add those when I find out.
Jane martin says
What no rockers for the porch? What about a hammocks? The vies is wonderful you did a great job on decor. Lots of hard work but I am you are pleased with the finished look. The weather is great all year around .
Anita says
Jane, we have loads more to do. I only had a week, so the priorities were getting the beds put together and having an electrician and plumber come to make sure everything is up and running properly. Yes hammock and rockers are on the list.
