So what do you put on the wall above a bed? Well there are a lot of options for above the bed art. Here are a few things I’ve tried.
1. Large mirror with ironstone platters
I’ve shown this bed recently with the new look. Here I used an oversized mirror and ironstone platters above the bed. I tried to make the width of the entire grouping about the width of the bed.
2. Large basket
Of course you can go with a basket that is oversized if you like also.
3. Large architectural piece
This is a reproduction from Ballard Designs.
4. A large piece of artwork
Well you can use a large piece of artwork over a bed for lots of drama.
5. Small Mirror
This is a simpler look, but sometimes is perfect depending on the look you are going for. It has a bit of a monastic feel with the very simple bed, but I like that.
6. Three dimensional art
You can get creative and hand something that isn’t considered ‘artwork’ above the bed, like these baby dresses, a instrument, a letter jacket, or a shelf with favorite items on it.
7. Shutters
I added a small antique mirror to the top of the shutters to give them a bit of panache.
8. Nothing
My husband didn’t think I was capable of the ‘nothing’ option, but I am. With the chandelier, I don’t think you need something on the wall above the bed. And with it angled, that brings up the ‘Where would you hang the artwork?’ question.
Your bedrooms in both homes are beautiful Anita and love what you have done to each area above the bed. Love that you used many elements of style over each bed. Have a great weekend.

I love the use of unusual items above the bed. The bedroom with 3 twin bed and the framed dresses above each…adorable. Happy Friday!!

Many of these wonderful options would also work well behind/above other large pieces of furniture such as a couch or a buffet that are placed against walls.

I love your beds and the lovely ruffle bedspreads….can you tell me where to purchase the bedspreads? Also love your artwork ideas….unfortunately live in CA in an area prone to earthquakes, so the only thing I use above my beds(just in case) are wreaths. Love your blog!
I am not sure which one you are referring to. Is it my city bed? I made that. If it is the ruffled lavender gingham duvets, they are from Pottery Barn.
Your ideas are fabulous. Each option looks fantastic. Living in California, I worry about hanging things that are too heavy and/or sharp above the bed (since we live in earthquake country). I really like the idea of hanging a very large, beautiful basket. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love your blog and decorating. We live in Florida as you know its warm/hot here.
Using cool colors I think helps in keeping ones home light and airy. My home is also decorated in blue, whites, cream with a touch of tan and black.
My friend teased me recently that I have 50 shades of blue in my home.
Love it. Found some old blue shutters, great color, and they will be going up over my iron bed.

I like to put quilts above my beds. It is a way to show them off, as well as a way to cover the space!
I just found your wonderful instructions for making slipcovers. I have done a lot of sewing in my life,
but never done this. I don’t understand one aspect of putting it together–If you pin for instance, one
arm of a loveseat, while it is on the furniture, and you sew the seams together, when you turn it right side out it will now fit the other side of the loveseat! Do you sew the seams together as pinned (inside out),
or do you use the pins as guidelines and turn the seams to the inside?? Clear as mud? Thank you so much!
