Granite for the New Kitchen

By Anita 20 Comments

Caroline and I have been working hard selecting granite for my new house.

At least that’s what I tell Mr. CH. What we really did was go to one of my builder’s houses, click here, to see his granite, lunched in a fabulous restaurant, and then stopped by the granite place.
These kitchen photos are from a house built by Ridgewater Homes.  It’s gorgeous by the way.  Since we are talking countertops, here are some more views of the countertops.

When I first saw the countertops, I thought they were marble, but they are actually white granite.  Granite is much more robust and not easily stained.  If you cook, marble is not very practical.

(See the range?  Mine will be similar.  *Excited!*)
I plan to use the same white granite in the kitchen and bathrooms. The deal was sealed when I realized that the marble is easily stained even by make up.  I don’t think my family is neat enough for marble countertops.

Caroline and I went to the granite store that had “the good stuff.” As we walked in the building, the lady behind the counter leaned toward us in a conspiratorial fashion and whispered, “We just got something really good in, and much of it is already on hold.”  I don’t know about you, but that piqued my interest.  I felt like we were in a speak easy.

Here’s what she showed me.

She was right, it was awesome!  I asked what it was called, and it turned out to be white river.

The granite place had about 4 types of white granite.  I didn’t take photos of all of them, but here’s another type they had. It’s more gray.

I considered using the marble shown below as the backsplash, but in the end, felt it didn’t work well.

I selected the best slab for my island.  And here it is in my house. Please excuse the quality of these photos.

Here is the kitchen above and the butler’s pantry below.

Here is the downstairs bath vanity. It will have a vessel sink.

And here is the island.

Don’t worry, all of this is being painted. I can’t wait to share it all with you!!

Love the white granite…I went back and forth too on using marble verses granite and chose granite. Don’t be surprised if you start a debate of the two on your blog…there are some marble lovers that love the age/stain that comes with marble…lol I used Bianca White in my kitchen to counteract my black cabinets and still love it…Love the feel, the way it hides bread crumbs, the way it brightens a room…I’m excited for you, you are going to love it even more as time passes…Congrats!

Anita, Your kitchen will be GORGEOUS! I love the lighter granite and it is much more practical. We had marble in the house I grew up in and my mom complained constantly about the staining.
