Normally decorators and designers are encouraging their clients to do this or that, but just as often they are talking clients out of things. For example, one client wanted to change out her granite counter tops for marble. Marble is gorgeous, but it just wasn’t going to work in her warm kitchen full of natural stone and wood tones. The cool color of the marble was not going to work with the warm tones in the kitchen. We suggested she stick with what she had and save her money. Marble might be the trend, but it just isn’t going to work with every kitchen. And her stained wood cabinets and the stonework was beautiful. She just needed to embrace what she had and appreciate it.
Often that means ignoring the trends. I may spend a lot of time reporting the trends, but it doesn’t mean I think they should be followed. I ignore most of them. I hope you enjoy this podcast episode where we tell you what we would talk you out of. If you have any of these things in your home, we are not saying they are bad. We are just saying we aren’t sure they’ll stand the test of time, and continue to be popular for the long haul. But if you like them, it doesn’t matter. Your house should reflect your tastes and interests.

Excellent. Your are very right. I have hard, spiced hickory cabinets, and the darker granite works well with the hickory in terms of enough contrast–the cabinets are not so dark and not so light. The reason I picked granite was for it’s function as well. It can take the heat and kitchen work much more than marble. I liked the safety of bullnose for my own clumsiness and for the safety of my children. It was easier to do with granite. Granite is pretty tough, even though no surface is without need of care and some protection.
Your pictures and site is lovely and informative.
