Old Books – New Look

By Anita 31 Comments

We recently came across many old family books, and I decided rather than put them up in a closet, I should put them in our bookcase in the family room.

The bookcase started out looking like this.
First I took out many of the vegetable dishes, but I left most of the roosters.
Then I added the old vintage and antique books.  Some were first edition books.  Here are a few of the books we found.

This book about a country preacher who was an ancestor to Mr. CH.  This book was published in the late 1800’s.

Inside, you could see signs that some of the books were printed during WWII.

And here is an AFTER photo of the bookcase.

Definitely a subtle change, and more obvious in person, but I love seeing the old books here.

Love the look of the older books . . . isn’t it surprising how something that seems insignificant can make such a big difference?

Yes, very pretty. I like to do that in small places also.
Was wondering about that crown on the table. Where did you find that and is it old? I am looking for a crown but can’t find any. It looks lovely.

Looks great! Is that where that lovely old decorating book is now kept? And, I do believe that rug would be perfect in my living room – don’t you think it’s time for a change in there?

The crown is from Wisteria, but I don’t think they carry these any more.

I adore your old books. That is an interesting comment about “Wartime Books”. I have several of these too and find them very interesting. The rearrangement looks grand!

Looks really lovely! I just love old books and always wonder about those that read them. Kinda like antique furniture & other items ~ I sorta make up stories about who may have used them and what their lives were like when I don’t know the history. 🙂

Just moved and wondering what to do with chickens and old books. I may need you to come over and help me. Will call you about delivering the chamber pot chair next week. I think I found a use for the ladder.

Anita, There is something intangible about old books! Is it their smell, the way they feel or the way they look so classic all grouped together. Your bookcase is beautiful. I am so glad you kept the roosters!
I am on the lookout for sets of old books. I just can’t seem to get my bookshelves to look the way I imagine them to be in my mind. Lots of inspiration from this post though!

Fall Table

By Anita Leave a Comment

Howdy!!

THE MAGIC OF FALL

The style at Cedar Hill Ranch is what I like to call “Texas Living with a French Accent.”  Most people who come to visit in person or on the blog, like to hang out on the back porch, so I have included a few photos so you can visit too.

This photo shows the rockers and the antique truck on the back porch, to see more, click here.

Here is our dining room.

The photo below is from the most popular post on our blog, Dreamy Daybed Redo with Feedsacks and Linen,

Now that I have introduced myself, and you’ve had a chance to settle in, let’s talk “Fall.”

If you are in Texas, then you will be quite aware that Fall has not arrived yet.  Things are cooler, and by cooler I mean less than 100 degrees, so it still doesn’t exactly feel like Fall here.  But in my own little Bloggy reality, it is Fall.  Sure it requires turning down the thermostat a little (okay a lot!) but hey, for you, it is worth it.   Here’s my take on Fall.

I found some wonderful apples and pears this week. If you want to imagine I picked them from my own trees, I won’t mention where I got them.  We did plant some peach and apple trees at Cedar Hill, but we’re not ready for a crop yet.

I placed the Bosc pears in an antique family dough bowl.

The apples here are shown in a vintage family wicker basket.

Here, I placed the apples in an Aidan Gray wire tureen.

I love this asparagus dish.  I have two dishes that look like a bowl of asparagus, but this one is my favorite.

I have lots of pitchers, creamers, salt and pepper shakers that look like eggplants, carrots, asparagus, beets and so forth.  I just set out a few here.

The salt and pepper shakers were placed on an old vintage book.  I chose a red book to add to the Fall feel.

I certainly enjoyed our little visit.  Please stop by any time at the ranch; I’ve got a rocker here with your name on it.
