Lonely Socks and Clocks

By Anita 29 Comments

My last post showed my city bedroom (you can see it here).  But I wanted to show you what it looks like inside my armoire.  It used to be full of office supplies when it was in the study, but now it is back in a bedroom and we need to use it for clothing storage.
Just as a reminder, here is what it looks like closed.
Now let’s take a look back inside.  See these baskets?  They are vintage gym locker baskets.  The baskets on the top shelf hold socks in one, and hairbrushes in the other.
On the next shelf, I put scarves in one, and an assortment of little goodies like lipstick holders in the other one.  On the basket on the left you can see a little sachet that my friend Ashley gave me.  It looks like a mini leopard print bra.  I think it still startles Mr. CH when he opens the armoire, but I like it.
I picked up the gym baskets on eBay for less than $20 each.  When I got them in the mail, I gave them a good scrubbing and spritzed them with perfume. I am amazed how well they have kept the lovely scent.  To the right of the baskets on the top shelf, are too vintage brushes we inherited that advertise that they are made from “real hair”.  Not sure where the hair came from, but sometimes it’s just best not to ask.  To the right of the brushes are a few wool sweaters of mine.  We certainly don’t need many here in Texas.
On the second shelf on the left are two silver metal Martha Stewart tins. I think they were originally intended to hold recipe cards, but I decided to use them for something else.  One holds socks without mates.  They stay here until I find their mate, at which time they go back to their color-coded bin in the closet.  Sometimes I find the missing sock and sometimes I don’t.  That box kinda reminds me of the island of unwanted toys in the movie Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.  It just seems sad.  In the other tin, I keep Mr. CH’s handkerchiefs.  The hankies never had mates, and so they don’t really know what they are missing, and don’t mind being single.  Thus their box seems a little happier to me; they are more like monks – single by choice.
On top, I placed an old vintage doll I found at the MIL’s house. I thought she was too cute to shut away in a box somewhere.
In front of the Martha Stewart tins, are some family items, vintage travel clocks, my FIL’s pocket watch in the glass cloche, a silver mirror and a small brush from a hotel in Buenos Aires.
Then Mr. CH has a whole shelf full totally devoted to his wool sweaters.  Not sure why he needs so many, but judge not… (lest ye be judged!  And besides I don’t want him questioning why I have so many shoes.)
The next shelf holds these green boxes that are actually full of data CD’s for the computer.  Oh well, I had to store them somewhere.

To the right of the green boxes, is another basket of scarves, and the bottom shelf holds Mr. CH’s shorts.

And there is a door on the bottom of the armoire.  I just remembered that.  I am wondering what I put in there, since I forgot.  Hold on, I’m going in.  I’ll be right back.  Wait right here.

Okay, I’m back now.  I looked in the drawer to see what I put in there.  I found my paper cutter, so good, I’m glad I put something in there.  That’s a good place for it, but I can see there is some unused room, so maybe I can squeeze something else in there later.
And that concludes this tour of my sock drawer, I mean armoire.  Oh I still can’t believe I wrote a whole post on lonely socks and clocks.  But I might as well, since I haven’t done anything yet to embarrass my fifteen-year-old this week.  And now…  my work is done.

A really beautiful armoire, I love the detailing on the outside. I like the way you have made it practical inside, yet have added some vintage pieces for interest too. Those missing socks are a puzzle, just where do they go?

You should come to my house and get me as organized as you are. I used to be better at it than I am lately. Just so busy, you know. The containers did a good job of solving your storage problems. The armoire is very pretty.—Shannon

We have three armoires in the house. One is used for a pantry, one as a closet for the kids, and one as an entertainment center. Very useful piece of furniture and I love how neat yours looks inside. You are inspiring me! I added one of your buttons to my site tonight and it matches perfect with my theme 🙂
