The Little Cabinet that Could

By Anita 29 Comments

I’ve had this little pine cabinet for years.  I liked it but wanted to paint it for quite some time, but never found a good way to do that until homemade chalky paint that is.  (My homemade chalky paint recipe is here.)

I used a cream colored homemade chalky paint, and I used Fiddes antique brown wax to antique it.

The vintage chicken on top of the cabinet was a consignment shop find.  You can see my electric toothbrush hiding around the corner from the cabinet.  I try to move that stuff out of the way for photos, but they sometimes show up any way.  It even looks like it’s hiding back there, taunting me, waiting for just the right moment to jump out, or is that just me?  Sorry, I was awake in the middle of the night last night due to a small but very loud creature in our attic.  Mr. CH is determined to get rid of you my little friend, so my suggestion is to get out and run for your life, far, far from here.
Here’s the cabinet before I painted it.  You can see that I also changed out the lamp.   I like my silver teapot lamp better here.  The little rock is a piece of petrified wood I found at the ranch.
I know you want to see my chicken, so here’s a close-up view.

And really my favorite here is this adorable little cow that Peggy gave me for Christmas. She gives the most awesome gifts!!

I got these cows at a yard sale.

And these more refined items are three Limoge boxes from travels to Paris, while the little bottles in the background are perfume bottles that Mr. CH picked up on travels to India. He used to travel there a lot for business.

And that’s a little bit of TEXAS and FRANCE all together in one happy, little box.

Wow — it really looks fantastic! I went to check out your ‘recipe’ — I’m trying the unsanded grout (when I have the time) next so we’ll see!

Wow you certainly have a knack for making things beautiful! All of my furniture is left over from my college apt/garage sales. It looks rough! This would be a great way to give some of the less worn items new life! Thanks for the idea!!

What a wonderful difference! It looks great. love all the little things in it, esp the limoge. For years I had some with pink bows in my bathroom to match the decor.
Your chick is too cute too!

Peggy is awesome, love that lil cow! Also love the cabinet. Where do you buy your wax? The big box stores don’t seem to carry any good stuff. What kind do you recommend/use?
