I’ve Got the Book Blues

By Anita 21 Comments

Recently we inherited many, many books.  So, I have been trying to incorporate books here and there, any where there is a vacant spot. I decided to use some of the blue books on the fireplace.  I have some other colors that I used elsewhere, and I’ll share those later.

These are all vintage books with lots of wonderful patina, that were all part of my FIL’s collection of theological books.

After my post about ripping covers off unwanted books  (my humble apology to you authors out there) I felt I should redeem myself by showing that I really do respect and love old books.  I am including a link to the cover-ripping post, but (SPOILER ALERT) if you are an author or writer, whatever you do, DO NOT click on this link.  If you still want to see it, you may do so at your own risk, here.

I did find this fun metal basket for about $10 that I put some books in, for a casual look. They were placed in there, ever so gently.

These metal one-dimensional urns were also about $10 each.  I actually bought one for a birthday gift, but ended up going back for two more for myself.  You know… ONE for you and TWO for me.  (Embarrassing but I admit it.)

I found this old wood box on eBay and it was, I believe, used to store some sort of food.  But you readers are so knowledgeable, I expect someone will know exactly what it was used for.

When we use the fireplace, we do move the books out of the way, but I am enjoying them on the fireplace when it is not in use.

Authors Note: No books were harmed in the making of this blog post.

I love the way you displayed the books and your new purchases are great. The round wooden box was the home of a big round of cheese in its former life.

Yesterday at my daughters second foray into the junking world, she picked up some old readers digest books and commented on them. I was like… ummmm…. have you ever noticed the books in on the shelf at home, they were your grandmothers, identical to those! She was admiring the pretty covers and gold binding. Now I know where to send them if I need the space!

    Anita,
Alright, dear friend…you’ve redeemed yourself for previously ripping the covers off some of your old books…cause these are just gorgeous on your fireplace!!!The blue box was possibly a biscuit box. Not as in the butter and jelly biscuits we eat for breakfast but as in a tea biscuit…like a shortbread cookie!
I’m going to borrow that idea of one for you, two for me if you don’t mind…I like it!
    Fondly,
    Pat

I have a similar wooden box- it originally held a large round of cheese in it. Mine got stenciled with “Paris” on its side to make it look more frou-frou! I bought it that way from a friend. Love all of your vintage books. Nice that they have some significance to you, since they were your FIL’s.
    hugs, Sue

Anita, I love the look of old books, too. They are made more special when they once were read and loved by someone special. You have displayed yours in very imaginative ways. Good luck on your party. Send the overflow to mine, please. I will treat them well.— Shannon

Oh I much prefer this kinder gentler approach to decorating with books. And since I’ve lots of blue in my family room now, I love your display of just blue books. Since we last chatted, I have covered another book for another short stack, but I am seriously thinking I need to do something on a grander scale. Keep the great ideas coming.

oooh – I LOOVE old books! I’ve been collecting them here and there for 30 years! Yours are so charming! I haven’t read 99 percent of mine, but I like the way they look! A fellow book cover ripper, too (readers digest and already falling apart books only!),

I love books too. Love the blue covers. But I have been known to rip the covers off of some of them. LOL.

I LOVE the old books used randomly, especially the wire basket full of bookx!! I believe the box is a cheese box for the big rounds.

I do the same with old books from thrift stores, flea markets and barn sales. Not the same sentimental value as yours, of course, but they get the job done! Congrats on the party. Don’t have anything to link up today but you know I’ll be back!
