Homemade Christmas Ornaments

By Anita 16 Comments

I do love homemade things, and years ago made these ornaments for my Christmas tree.

The first thing I did was draw a pattern for a heart on paper.  I made it slightly lopsided and slightly bigger than I wanted the heart to be to provide room for the seam allowance (for this project 3/8 inch.)  I don’t think I have the pattern any more, so sorry for not showing it.
Then I folded my fabric right-sides facing out, and pinned my pattern on the fabric.  You need to be sure not to cut out both sides with the right side up or you will have one side facing the wrong way when it is sewn together.  (If your pattern is exactly symmetrical, then this will not be a problem.)  I cut out the two sides and removed the pins and paper pattern.  Then placing right sides together, I placed a loop of ribbon (to hang the ornament) at the top, tucked inside the heart, and pinned the two sides together, right-side facing in.  I sewed the heart with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, leaving a small (about 1 inch) opening on the side.  Then I turned the piece right-side out.  I used a pen (with the point retracted) inserted in the opening, to push the fabric all the way out at the point of the heart.

I stuffed it with polyester fiber-fill, and sewed the small opening closed.  Using a glue gun, I attaced a few buttons and ribbon to the front of the heart.  That’s it.

These were so fun to make and they are some of my favorite ornaments on the tree.  I made about two dozen.

Since I didn’t use Christmas fabric or colors, I sometimes hang these ornaments on armoire keys or dresser knobs all-year round.

I love homemade ornaments. Yours are very pretty. I also love your fireplace with the skates, sled, etc., and the stories behind each item.

Very cute ornaments! Most of the ones on our “main” tree are handmade also or have some special meaning, which I think is just as it should be. Have a blessed Christmas!

So pretty! And I like the idea that you can use them year-around. They look adorable on the tree. Years ago I made fabric candy canes and I still use them…fun. Happy Holidays!
