I love Ann, the real deal, a sweet and talented all rolled up into one. Her sewing skills are AH-mazing. Here she is in her own words.
Hello…I’m Ann and I am the creator of the blog On Sutton Place.
I am so happy and honored to be on Anita’s porch. I am one of her biggest fans and have loved her style since the first time I visited her blog. Let’s get started!
1. Why did you start a blog?
I started a blog because I was bored. That’s the honest truth. I had a full-time job but still had too much time on my hands. Let’s just say that adjusting to my empty nest didn’t go so well! When I discovered the world of shelter blogs I immediately knew it was something I could do. There were many, many things I had to learn but the whole process has been amazing.
2. What was the most exciting thing that has happened to you because of your blog?
The most exciting and gratifying thing for me has been being able to resign from my day job and become a full-time blogger. It took a few years of hard work and believe me, I had my doubts…but I had the full support of my husband (literally) so that was one of the key factors in making it happen. We were finished raising our children and college was paid for. I supplemented my blog income with an Etsy shop that has enabled me to sew with the vintage linens that I adore. My days are full and I love what I’m doing. I could never ask for anything more.
3. What is your dream gig or do you already have it?
I think I already have it!
4. What are a few things that readers would be surprised to find out about you?
Well…let’s see. I hate to travel and rarely leave home unless it involves my family. I will go anywhere with them! I have lived in the same place my entire life (which may contribute to my tendency to be a homebody!) A few years ago I lost 40 lbs. and have somehow managed to keep it off. You can read my weight-loss story here. I hate going to the grocery store, LOVE Dancing With the Stars and can’t have potato chips in the house (because I’ll eat the whole bag…seriously.)
5. How would you describe your style?
My style is comfortable, classic, farmhouse. My design philosophy is simple. I collect things I love and make them work in my decor. I think we all have evolving tastes and in turn, that contributes to evolving styles. How I decorate now is not how I decorated 10 years ago. However, certain things reflecting my style have remained constant. The color blue, symmetry spattered about and architectural details. Occasionally my daughter will tell me “that’s very you.” To me that says it all. When someone walks in your home they should know it reflects you, your tastes and your interests.
6. What are your top 3 favorite posts?
I’m going to go backwards and start with No. 3. It’s a little post I did last Christmas that went viral on Pinterest. It’s about making the perfect bow and I almost didn’t post it because I thought it was a little “been there, done that.” Boy was I wrong about that!
My No. 2 post is one I did just this past spring on some curb appeal projects I did with my daughter at her home. We spent three weekends together at her house sprucing it up. The post seemed to ring true to so many people because it was “real life DIY.”
My No. 1 post isn’t even really a post on my blog. Last fall I was asked to guest post on Miss Mustard Seed about running a creative business. I told my story about starting an Etsy shop, what I learned along the way and shared my tips for success. I installed the post as a page on my blog and have heard from many people that it’s helped them either get started or become more successful.
I’m so grateful to Anita for the opportunity to meet her readers. Thank you for visiting with me on Anita’s Back Porch!
Okay I learned some new things today about Ann, and I’ll bet you did too.
